Not sure if this is the right section or not. I was talking to a guy at work who is into shooting and I mentioned that I just upgraded to my RPAL. He asked what type of handgun I planned on buying and I said I washonestly confused by the whole thing as there are so many choices. Anyway he has some handguns and he told me he could let me borrow them to try out. I asked him how we do that and he said he will this put his ATT in the cases and then it will work for me when I have them. His ATT says good for any range in the province. I just want to confirm that this is legal to do it that way, wouldn't want to get in trouble.

Doesn't quite work that way. For you to borrow his firearms you must have your own
valid ATT for transport. Your ATT must specifically cover the firearms type to be
borrowed/transported, eg. If you do not have 12.6 you cannot borrow and transport
12.6 firearms.

Maybe take anything your buddy at work says with caution, doesn't
seem to know what he is talking about. He's gonna get you thrown
in jail. lol

Hope this helps. Good luck with your gun shopping.

That is what I figured as well, he just said I can use his but that didn't make much sense.

To possess a restricted firearm you need the registration certificate as well. Your buddy probably confused that with the ATT. As stated, you will need your own ATT to transport them. I would also check your ATT for conditions because that seems to vary by province.

Usually you need to meet at a range or other place that your both covered by your own ATT's to transfer possession of the firearms. He needs to give you the registration/ownership of the firearm (or copy of) not his ATT.

In ontario to borrow one. My buddy needed an statt for temporary storage at my house. I then needed a specific statt with his reg number on it. Then I could pick it up from his house and use it. Only at specified ranges. Unlike my ltatt that states all CFO ranges and DND ranges in ontario.

Either he said ATT in error or you heard "ATT" instead of "reg slips" in your confusion.

Because the ATT's and short term non standard ATT's are still under the control of the provinces you should likely call the CFO for a short term and ask. Tell them you're borrowing your buddy's guns and that you were intending to do the hand off at a range and if that's OK. If it's not they'll tell you what is needed.

Here in BC I was told that since there is no change in actual ownership that simply handing over at the range was fine. But if I wanted to drive to their house and pick them up I'd need a STATT.

But that is here and you are there.

I've recently learned that ATTs are a disaster in terms of standardization.
Someone posted one where he doesn't even need the certs but can only move firearms registered to his address.
TL;DR read your ATTs

Best way is for your buddy to bring HIS guns and meet YOU at the range. Offer to supply the ammo and coffee and any range fees.
No fuss, no muss! The advantage here is he can keep an eye on his guns and coach you on the nuances of each one as you said you are a noob with handguns anyways. If he is any kind of a handgun expert, you might get some useful instruction on handgun usage. Rifle skills are not easily transferable to handgun shooting and bad habits can develop pretty quick!

Mine doesn't say anything about the certs. Reads only firearms registered to my address.

^^ this, otherwise you could be in big trouble, or do like BCRider said, call them...

Play it safe. My ATT (which is now redundant due to C-42??) says anything registered to my address. My wife has some guns registered to her so she is grand mothered when they start making more stuff prohib, and we all know that will happen unless we all VOTE! I can take her stuff to the range. Call up the ATT guys and tell them what you want to do. They may even tell the truth because their jobs are on the line, again.

Play it safe by calling the CFO in your province to get the lowdown on borrowing restricted firearms....

No such thing as Grandmothering!
When guns are prohibited, there is no guarantee of Grandfathering at all.
Look up SPAS 12 for example.
