Hello all

I’m about to buy some of my first 9mm ammo for my SIG P226 but I’m wondering about bullet weights.

I plan on just shooting paper at the range but I don’t know what weight to choose and why I should choose that weight. The choices seem to be 115grs, 124grs and 147grs.

What I figure is that the lighter the bullet the less recoil there would be but hey I could have this @ss backwards.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I'm also a new 9mm shooter, so I might be completely off on this. But... I found that the 115 gr loads had a "snappier" recoil than the 147 gr loads did out of my CZ 75B. I would guess this would be from the higher muzzle velocity. My particular gun seems to shoot the 124 gr Winchester loads the best (out of what I've tried so far). Try a few weights / brands out and see how they shoot out of your gun, you'll probably find a combination that shoots a little better than the rest.

True different loads will feel "snappier" or "pushier". Part of that is bullet weight but it is also affected by powder charge and powder speed (how fast it burns). Like Scott said, try a few different kinds. Also check on muzzle velocity for that particular ammo.

Everyone "feels" recoil differently. Some percieve the snap to be unpleasant, but the shove tolerable, and vice versa. With a little room to spare, the true recoil of all three rounds is essentially equal.

If you have to choose, go with the 124's to start. You might find your particular gun and it's sights print closer to point of aim with one of the other weights, but odds are 124 will be on the money.
