does anybody else ever have brass spear point jags break through a patch while going down the bore....every once and a while this has happened to me. I also use a bore guide and am pretty religious about proper care of a rifles leade, bore, crown, etc but whenever this has happened it just makes me shudder and cringe.....

reason it is fresh in my mind is I was out in the rain on the weekend and ran a dry patch on a jag through the bore when I got home in case any moisture made it through the black tape...and low and behold it happened about 1/3 of the way into the rifling....

so whattya got to say?

Well I have see it happen, but if you are using a bore guide it shouldn't matter at all. The jag is smaller than the rod, and the rod will not touch the interior of the barrel, throat, etc when using a guide. You should be fine.

Your patches may be a tad bit too big or too thick but as mentioned above if you're using a bore guide there should be no problems unless the rod is bending enough to contact the rifling as you push the patch down the bore.

I think I may try a different brand of patch....the ones I have are 100% cotton and they fit real nice and snug...99% of the time all is well but it seems that they just rip and let go the other 1% of the time. I am not using excessive force at all....nice firm one handed pressure...

It shouldn't really matter, brass is far softer than the tempered steel your barrel is made of. The guys who said your patches are too big are probably right, but this isn't as big a deal as you think.
