Hey everyone,

I have a quick question about how far apart you like to go for decoying and calling coyotes. Im out east and its pretty forested and bushy/agricultural area. if you set up in one spot and shoot one, how far do you go before you set up again.

thanks,

It varies considerably. You need to go far enough so that you are calling territory that has not heard your call from the last set up.

Is the wind blowng? How hard? Are you moving upwind or down wind? Do any ridges or high ground separate the two spots? Is there solid bush or just broken clumps of trees between the spots? How big are the trees? Were you calling from a high spot in the last one? Have you heard any coyotes? Is there fresh sign?

So it depends. Sometimes we move only 500 meters or so. Sometimes we move a few kilometres to a brand new area.

I usually go about 400-500 yards if I got premission. I know I've called one side of a 50 acre bush and got no response. Went around the other side and tried, coyote in less than 5 minutes. All to do which way the wind is blowing and lay of the land, sound wont reach some places.

Its a bit of a catch 22, really. If you move a mile or two between sets, you probably increase your odds of gaining a coyote's ear, but you also burn up time during your movement that you could have spent calling. Most days I'd say whether to pack up and move any significant distance will depend on the terrain and wind (i.e. where you can set up again).
