I recently got a No4 Mk2 Enfield from my Dad (other than the bubba'd stock it is intact and in great shape) and am having trouble figuring out the "pop-up" peep sights. It is this part:

What do the numbers correspond to? I am assuming it has to do with yardage or distance, but which, and how much?

Yards. Theoretically, with Mk. VII ammunition, after the rifle has been zeroed properly at 30yds, with front sights being exchanged as necessary to obtain the correct basic elevation zero.
The little latch which secures the elevation is broken. It should not stick out like that.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's not my actual sights, that's just a picture I grabbed from the internet b/c I'm lazy.

Tiriaq,
So the rifles were zeroed at 30yd? At what sight setting, 200?

You know it can be as long as the correct 30 yard zero target is used. Thats what is issued at Bisley and it allows you to check almost all your settings for elevation!

That would be handy. Is there a copy of this target online, or available in Canada/UK?

It sure would be nice for zeroing our Ranger Patrols No.4's. They're all over the place for zero.

I may have one I can scan or easier if I put one in the post, you wont get incorrect dimensions and it would be easy. I have some shot ones lying around, I'll look them out. I normally drive past Bisley twice a week but for the next 3 & 1/2 weeks I'll be in Canada of all places. If I have a good one I'll post it from Montreak when we arrive and you can copy as many as you want!

That would be outstanding, Tim! Let me know and I'll pm my address. I can cover the postage too, if you'd like.

Any rough idea of the target dimensions?

For those good at maths 71 feet and 7 inches but 25 to 30 seems to do. I only have paper photocopies but you are welcome to one of these or I can get a card one from Bisley in the post. I also have high and standard velocity .22 rf table targets for the same job!

Sorry I couldnt get them the right way up, I'll get new cards as these have been in my folder in a damp garage for a few years. If they no longer make them then I'll get these scanned on out A3 scanner at work and you can print on card!
It does look like you start at 200 yards and adjustments can be worked out for Vernier scale sights at the magical 71 feet and 7 inches!

I can e mail these but a card if you want is no problem next month, pm me your address!

It is necessary to exchange front sights, until the group forms at the correct point on the target when the sight is set for that range. Windage is adjusted at the same time.
