Question about FX

I am considering jumping into the PCP world and looking at the FX Impact M3, FX King or FX Dynamic Express 500.

I’ve never used nor seen a FX in real life so I a bit hesitant to jump in blind given the cost….

My use case is 25m to 100m target shooting along with the occasional pesting.

Based on internet feedback, FX’s seem to do fairly well at high power in 25m-50m-100m range.

My question is regarding the ability to tune it down to do some 10m plinking; with lower power and less noise. I am thinking tuning it down to ~ 600fps for this use. Basically I am looking for tuning flexibility.

Does anyone have any experience with these tools or thoughts you can share with me? Anything else I should consider ?

I have been reading and reading as well, basically regarding the same questions you have. 'On paper' it should theoretically be possible to quickly tune something like the M3, etc, through a range of 'power' settings using pressure and hammer force. In reality it isn't quite that simple and tuning for a moderately heavy slug will not allow detuning, if one can call it that, for a lightweight pellet. The barrels are kind of specific items designed for either slugs or pellets based upon twist rates and the internal profile near the muzzle. It probably would be possible to tune for an average use with a pellet barrel and be able to change out pellet weights with pressure and hammer tweaks to maintain accuracy within a range of pellet masses. Or, with the same setup, change power and hammer settings to provide for reasonable accuracy with a single pellet weight at differing muzzle velocities. The same scenario would apply to slugs with a 'slug' barrel.

On the other hand, I could be totally incorrect with what I have gleaned from messages and many videos.

Thanks Rick.

I probably should add that I am thinking about .22 caliber, 500mm barrel optimized for pellets to start.

Maybe I am just looking for the Airgun unicorn that does not really exist and expecting too much based on influencer reviews.

I have some of the popular high end PAL and non PAL springers along with C02 units but never had a PCP.

I have a FX Impact mkII in .22. It is tuned down to 700 fps with 16 gr pellets using my slug barrel. I use it to shoot indoor shilouette at 15 meters in the winter. It is very accurate, my scores are 32 to 38. I have the reg at 70 bar, forget the other 3 settings. I can shoot six matches (240 pellets) and still have a 100 bar in the tank. Hope this helps.

Thank you mojoman, I appreciate you sharing your experience. I know asking about the sound levels at different settings is very subjective but how is the sound at 700 vs high power? Is it a significant difference? Watching videos doesn’t help since most of them come from places where suppressors are allowed.

Thank you rifleman338; can I ask why you went with Panthera vs Dynamic or the Impact? I am still on the fence regarding the model.

That is good to hear. I am assuming that it is the Superior Heavy (Slug) liner. It brings up all sorts of questions for me.

Do you ramp it up and shoot slugs outdoors at long range in the summer and, if so, what kind of weight/velocity do you use, what distance do you shoot at, and is it still extremely accurate?

I have asked people on other airgun forums about pellet performance with the Superior Heavy liner and they say it goes to crap at 75+ yards even with heavy pellets and really requires slugs to work well. They have said that the best accuracy with heavy pellets is at around 970ft/s but even at that, it isn't very good.

Rick.

I jumped directly in to airgunning with a TX-200HC in .22 running at 13fpe, and a TX-200 MKIII in .177 with a Vortek 12fpe kit running at about 11.8fpe. After intensive testing and playing I have finally found that the .22 likes 18.13gr JSB Jumbo Diabolo Exacts and shoots comparably, most of the time, to the .177 with 10.34 gr JSB Exact Heavy which is just superb.

While I really enjoy the springers, I want to get a nice .22 PCP and I am really searching around for something general purpose like yourself. FX has come out with their latest PCP, the DRS and some are finally hitting Canada. Currently only the synthetic stock 500mm version but the 600 and 700mm versions should be out in a month or three. Walnut or MDT stocks in a similar timeframe. The King should also be back in stock sometime soon as well, and I really like the gorgeous GRS stock, but that is a dear beast. And on top of all that, airtanks, compressors, fittings, and a scope all have to be acquired.

I also own an Impact in 22cal with a 600 bbl if I remember correctly which has also had it's legs stretched out to the 330yd steel. I'm using the FX ballistic app for data and so far it's been working great. Just wish I had more time to get them out.

It is quieter, but not shoot in your back yard in the city quiet.

I have not turned it up and shot slugs through it, only indoors at 700 fps. I bought the gun from I guy I shoot with, it had the slug barrel in it when I bought it. The gun was so accurate at 700 fps and the pellets I was using that I never saw the need to put the pellet barrel on and try it (it came with a pellet barrel).

My very first PCP was the Impact MK2, the first model with PP...that was four years ago. When looking back in timeline, the first year I wasted so much time "wanna be a mechanic", but ones I figure out (my upgrades ;) the life got much easier, the best education I got from AGN. My current upgrades exceed MK3.5 :)
Initially started with pellet liner .25x700 (STX-A with Twist Rate 1:27) and along the line collected six liners with different twist rates in both .22 and .25 cals.
So far I have well over 25K shots down the barrel both pellets and slugs, shooting exclusively in gun club environment only 50 meters and 100 meters BR. So I cannot comment how quiet it is...get some earmuffs for neighbours ;)
I just want to point out don't trust those utube content creators, keep in mind "speed kills the accuracy". Depend of a Twist Rate different liners accepts different speeds, but ones the projectile start corkscrewing you must slow it down. Sub 900 fps for both pellets and slugs is a most accurate POI.
In .25 cal up to 100 meter rings best scores I got shooting JSB 34gn MK1 pellets trailed by MK2's.
Beyond 100 I would recommend going with 37gn and heavier slugs like 41-44-46. The "mass" is a factor keeping these inline.
In .22 cal up to 50 meters BR rings pretty much any weight works between 15 to 25 gn, but if you wanna reach to 100 meter rings the heavier slugs will buck the air movement better. Because the .22 slugs are longer (diameter to length ratio) the BC is better.
The .25 is a good mediate calibre, but if shooting rings @ 100 is in your focus, the .30 heavy pellets or the .22 heavy slugs performed better. The ultimate best slugs so far the Altaros CNC machined slugs, people claiming the best BC and accuracy.
I was considering gettin myself the .22x600 Pantera for longer 200-300 BR ranges, but my gunclub books don't have any wording "air rifle" for these distances ... and my diplomacy is not winning so far against the bureaucracy or politics.
A doppler radar is a standard first must accessory, I plug it into my Tablet aside with Strelok and Windmeter.

Thank you bigHUN, I appriciate the feedback based on your experience.

6 liners !!!!!! Don’t think, too many can say that, that’s pretty cool.

OK, I didn't released the full story. Six liners sharing between two guns, I made the adapters interchangeable with minimum effort.
The second airgun is the Leshiy2, and find out the FX x600 liners are more consistent then the Alpha Precision 350 or 500. Also the FX shroud have factory built in internal air stripper and that makes the bark forward directing at the muzzle.
So one gun is always .22 and the second .25, just for fun of it depend what game is coming up next.

Well, I broke down and bought an FX King 600mm in .22. What an incredible air rifle, While you can't quite have your cake and eat it too, the tuning will allow one to be able to tune within a range of pellet or slug weights and dial in incredible accuracy and range. Out of the box I could easily dial it in to use very light pellets of 10 - 25 gr from 12 - 35+fpe, to 22- 28gr slugs with 20-40 fpe. So, bottom line is that you can tune it within a low to moderately heavy range of pellets and slugs just by dialing a couple of knobs. One can also tune it within a base range of medium to very heavy weights of pellets and slugs by increasing plenum pressure with a hex key to set up the rifle for the really heavy slugs, then fine tuning with the adjustment knobs. One caveat! NEVER adjust pressure with the rifle cocked.

Additionally, If you are looking to run very heavy slugs at long range in .30 or .35cal, one could change out the hammer with a heavier tungsten one. If course to change calibers, one has to change out the barrel and associated parts.

I highly recommend this airgun! It looks great, it feels and fits great with comb and LOP tool-less adjustments and it shoots great.
