I got some new sights to put on my 32 win spl 94 im having a hard time finding punches to knock out the pins would it be ok to use the regular steel punches that I have or can get at the hardware store . I was looking on line and the punches they have are a steel base on them so whats the difference ??? thanks hound 2013

Brownells sells sight punches made from plastic so they ruin your sights

I think pitbull meant '' don't '' ruin your sights.

Basically what you want is a Pin punch. They have flat bottoms so they get better contact with the item they're moving. The brass versions are softer than steel and usually scratch less. Also, you're better off with a small mallet or a combo nylon/brass hammer. Their faces are usually machined perfectly flat so you get cleaner contact.

For stuff like this you want brass or even aluminium. You want to use a metal that is softer than the steel of the old and new sights.

A store that sells automotive tools should have brass punches. If you can't find such a set then check the metal rack at the local hardware store for a brass rod of 3/16 to 1/4 inch diameter. Cut off a 4 inch piece, dress the ends and use that as a brass drifting punch to push the sights.
