question about lee enfield receivers

Wow I'm genuinely sorry go have caused this much drama. Think I'm gonna start asking the Google more. Thank you those who had this great info. Again sorry

Don't apologise you did nothing wrong. Don't be afraid to ask in the future either that's what is so great about CGN and especially the milsurp section, there are many knowledgeable folks here willing to help out. You do have to weed out some answers that are incorrect from time to time. People are people. Sometimes it's someone passing along info they think is correct but isn't and sometimes it's people that are so full of themselves they spout whatever they dream up as gospel.

IIRC one of the proposed but not implemented changes when the SMLE MkIII* was adopted was to eliminate the ejector screw.
The Austrian M1886/88 also depended on the case rim contacting the lhs wall for ejection and it was not fitted with a purpose built ejector at all.

BTW, I recently had a #4 that was not ejecting reliably. I use it to compete in rapid fire matches, so poor ejection was an issue.

The solution was to replace the spring in the extractor, so the case would have more side force on it as it came out of the chamber.

I did not attempt to replace the spring myself. I have heard stories about breaking the spring when trying to install it. So I had it done by a gunsmith who knew what he was doing.

The empty cases now flick out of the rifle.

I've replaced several extractor spings and keep spares on hand for both No1 and No4 - 5 Enfields.

it can take a bit of effort and 3 hands.

The ejector screw is to ensure a loaded round will eject when the rim hits the tip of the screw, the fired case is ejected by rubbing the left side of the receiver.
