Question about old revolver, S&W 29-2 sap cap 'pitting'

hello,
i was lucky to pick up a very nice 29-2 (8 3/8) and through 6 snap caps in to dry fire... and after a few weeks i noticed some of the aluminum snap caps had small pits i had not noticed before. all the mechanics feel smooth, and the hammer is falling on the center of the cartirdges, what could have cause the damage to the caps?

Its probably either from manufacture or scraping against the receiver plate when closing the cylinder.

I tend to think they are scratches as well. If they really are pits are you noticing any white'ish powder around the pits or on the recoil sheild? If you have some white powder like stuff it implies aluminium corrosion through electrolysis due to the dissimilar metals being in contact. If these really are pits and not actual scratches then don't leave the snap caps in place when not dry firing. Also put a light oil film on the snap caps.

will do, thanks for the replies.
the receiver plate looks cleam and smooth, so i think it probably is a problem with the caps. one day when i get back home i will try to take a photo or two.
