I am in the process of redoing the wood on my M37 Ithaca. Has any one here done this on the corncob forend? I am wondering if the grooves were finished with a darker stain? They look much darker than everything else. Not sure if this is my perception or if indeed they are stained/ painted darker than the rest. Appreciate the input.

The grooves become darker from exposer to weather and the sweat from a person's hand and/or gloves that are wet, etc. It builds up there, and then sinks into the wood over time. When you finish your forend, those grooves will remain dark, but it'll look really nice.

Another reason for the dark groves is that these are where the end of the woodgrain is exposed. Basically, if you were to chemically strip and sand the grooves back to natural wood colour and seal the whole foregrip in clear lacquer you MAY avoid darkening the grooves. The fact is that the grooves (which are cut across the grain) will absorb stain or oil much faster and appear darker than the rest of the wood.
