Question about Removing Blueing

Hi there,

Im in the process of seriously customising a couple of 1911's and on one of them I would like to remove all the blueing on the slide (except for where the rear serrations are) and the idea is to have the slide with a "Stainless" look. The slide is Forged Steel ( Norc ). What i was wondering is this: Now that the blueing is off, should i be looking for some kind of clear coating sealant to protect the metal? Or is the steel on the slide okay the way it is? I was never sure if bluing was more of a "look" instead of a protection. Probably both i guess. Im really hoping ill be able to achieve this and still have my slide protected. There must be some kind of clear coat out there. I dont want to chrome or nickel plate it either, I kinda like the bare steel kinda mattish finish it would be.

Hope some of you gurus will be able to help me out. :D

Cheers,

Rob

I guess i should be a bit more specific to get a response. Im trying to avoid having to buy Armacoat or any other online product. Im curious if theres any clear protective spray that can be boat at hardware store that would suffice in protecting the metal of the slide inside and out. For example, I was looking at a Krylon spray that was clear and protected metals from rust and corrosion. Has anyone used this or similar products with good results or should I just suck it up and order Armacoat or Duracoat etc..

Thanks alot.

Cheers

I've used several clear protective sprays for protecting bare metal, thay all sucked. A couple sucked by the time they were dry; but they all were terrible once the metal got a little bit of handling.
Maybe a two-part epoxy type clearcoat would work on bare metal; but all the ones I'm familiar with say to use them over primer and paint, so I don't know how they'd work over bare brushed steel.
If anyone knows the answer to that, DH79 would be the guy.

A good car wax would probably be your best bet.

I live in a humid climate and have had very good results for years with pure lanolin on any guns in the white. It must be pure and only needs a wipe over a couple of times a year. Hope this helps. .45-90 OH! And to remove blue from stuff that will fit in a pot. Boil in streight white Vinager (when the old girl is out;) and be sure to boil a couple times in clean water right away. The blue will wipe off with rag, Then hit it Lanolin while hot.:)

Gunkote makes a clear that you can apply over bare metal and protecs like the regular colours. Maybe Armacoat has something similar.
