Question about revolver cylinder

Will a cylinder from a single action revolver function properly in another revolver of the same make and caliber? I was always of the opinion that these parts had to be matched during manufacture.

Guns are designed in such a way that their parts can be interchanged between the same make and models with little or no adjustment.

So the short answer is yes.

The true answer is maybe.

Ruger cylinders (for example) are matched by the serial prefix number~ most of the time a cylinder of a different prefix can be fitted, but not always.

Cylinders, specifically the hand and ratchet are matched and fitted to each other.

Some parts are replaceable without fitting but not all. Just because they are produced and for sale does not mean there is no fitting required.

The timing may be out on the gun after replacing the cylinder. It depends on the gun and the replacement part.
