I never noticed threads showing on my other rifles, Is this normal?? the feed ramp is away fron the chamber " guessing 3/8 - 1/2" " This is how it arrived new. It might be nothing but I noticed it right away with stainless steel it was easy to spot. It feeds ammo fine.

Don't worry bout it

I don't know if there is a max number of threads that can be exposed but my rifle is very similar.

I am not an expert but it is part of Savages barrel system that is based on WW2 machine gun design. The barrel nut allowed the armorer set headspace on a new barrel by simply threading it in to the proper spec and then use the barrel nut as a "jam nut". Possible to do in the field with minimum tool rather than using a lathe to machine the shoulder on the barrel to set headspace.

Though it is not used in benchrest and precision shooting it has proved to be just as accurate as any other factory rifle using the conventional method.

One benefit is that this system allows for "switch barrel rigs" (change barrel and bolt face) or an shot out tube to be replaced with no machining necessary.

The receiver will need to have more threads than the ones used to allow for the barrel to be threaded in further if need to achieve proper headspace.

I figured it had some thing to do with that but I wanted to make sure.. The only thing that sucks about it, is that the feed ramp is so far from the chamber it makes loading single shots a pain unless you push the cartrage into the mag then it's fine. but i can't just through a round in and close the bolt

Yeah I agree there, single feed is kinda annoying, it can be done, but you need small dainty fingers like me and place the cartridge well into the chamber.

Here is an insert that can be placed it magazine/receiver area to enable single feed.

All front locking bolt actions have this gap. That is where the bolt lug goes when the bolt is closed.

Single feed a Savage is no problem if you put in a Hi Score follower. Should be able to offer these shortly.
