Looking at getting into service rifle shooting, as for what is allowed & whats Not. I have a AR15 so what do I need for optics? red dot, open sights, scope? barrel length right now I have a M4 flat top 16" 1-9" twist or would I be better off getting a 20" or even a match bull barrel set up? is there any custom Mod work I can have on it or does it have to be close to stock? if so then I think a bull barrel would be out. just tring to understand what set up I can have.. anything else I will need for shooting?

A stock 16" rifle with some good ammo will be all the gun you need for the first few years. If you look at the scores being put out with stock rifles you will see that most shooters are not being held back by their rifles. Skip the upgrades and spend the money on training.

I had the chance to give the Falcon Menace a good looking at in Ottawa, now I see Allen Gun works has some in stock.

Here is a good review.

For the money it is a very very good way to go. I may be buying one for the lend-a-rifle I am building.

If your gun isn't beat up and your barrel not shot out... It will do just fine as is!

Get out there, try the game, see what other people are using... Then make whichever changes best suit you.

You'll get better preformance by practicing shooting positions (and doing a bit of weight training).

If I were going to buy a rifle and sight for service rifle competition, I would get a brand name 20" rifle, with a match barrel, and top it with a Nightforce 2 1/2 - 10.
That would be a cost be damned approach.
If your rifle is sufficiently accurate, use it. If it has a flashider, dump it and install a brake. A Falcon Menace 1 1/2 - 5 @ 324.95 (about 20 left in current shipment) will do the job. There are a number of other scopes that will also work. You need convenient, repeatable adjustments for 100 - 500, as well as for windage. Target type knobs are an advantage.
Invest in range time and practice. If you have any sort of decent rifle and sight, practice is what counts. You need to be able to post decent scores prone deliberate; that is a foundation. The position matches is where a lot of points go down the tube. Work on your position shooting and fitness. This is where you can really improve your scores. Solid sitting and kneeling positions are very important. You can practice rundowns over the winter on a treadmill.

My AR is new custom built for door kicking right now, so I might have to remove a few parts as it has quad rail, tangodown grip, magpul MOE stock & Maid grip built on a Stag flat top M4 style 16" upper also new w/ 1-9" twist. I was thinking of installing a GG&G-1006RA A2 MAD with ranging aperture rear sight, which should help with 5 apertures preset 100-500

Are bipods allowed? also what would the course of fire be?

No bipod allowed.

Get a low power scope, many use the Elcan, and other like something in a variable range - 1.5 - 10 x type of stuff. You shoot out to about 500 metres. You don't need all the fancy kit, simple is better, and lighter.

Assuming I could shoot well to begin with :D, how competitive would I be using a No.4 Mk.2 with a Central target aperture sight? Are there different classes of shooter, ie: iron sights vs scopes?

Your going to be at a disadvantage when against a C7/AR but usually if you are shooting an Enfield you are in your own class anyways. Its certainly in the spirit of the matches.I give big props to the rangers and other who want to come out and shoot the enfield. That is a true test of skills for sure!

I shot 554 with a 12.5" Noveske and a NF 1 -4 NSX (circle and dot) two years ago(maybe 3?), without turning the knob once - who needs a 20" and 2-8X???

A 16" will do the job just fine - Way back, I shot 545 with a Bushmaster 14.5" M4 and an ACOG TA31F, using factory non-match ammo - bone stock Bushmaster, stock trigger, OEM M4 stock.

It is not the rifle - it is practice , practice and pracitce -physical fitness and running! I spent more time in front of the computer now than shooting - and my score went to s**t.....and weight trained much more in the past.

Stick with the Stag, buy an optic (1-4) and start shooting (and running)

All good advice .... I must add that you should wear body armor so that you can look buff for the mirror! :D

You know it's coming; if you don't wear a plate carrier, yer #### will fall off!

Sorry, I could not resist!

Darn, I've only got a level 2 vest laying around, I guess I'll need to go shopping again...

This been said, how does it work for woman  I've just about convince the GF to come and shoot a few match (We can't let Lise be the only female shooter)... But convincing the GF to wear body armour might be a tough sell...
