Question about shooting lead/fmj

Kind of a stupid question, say I bring 2 boxes of ammo with me to the range, one box of hard cast 44 mag and the other FMJ 44 mag. Which should I shoot first, cast or FMJ. Or should I only shoot one type before cleaning the barrel.

With a powerful round like .44Mag it doesn't hurt to be cautious, I would shoot a few of the hard cast...check the barrel for leading then carry on to the FMJ.

Shoot the FMJ's first. Firing the lead first only coats or leaves some lead residue in the lands and grooves according to how hard the lead is. If you fire the FMJ's after the lead cartridges, you only drive the lead residue deeper into the lands and grooves.
Hence the common myth that firing a couple of FMJ's after lead cleans out the barrel. Nothing could be further from the truth...

Doesn't matter. However, the jacketed ammo is loaded hotter than the cast. Means it has more felt recoil. Eventually, it'll dawn on you that shooting factory ammo of any kind is too expensive and you'll reload.

Thanks for the info, I only bought factory ammo because it's hard to find 44 mag brass right now, already got my first 150 reloads ready to go test at the range.
