I have a bunch of 3"mag steel shot for a 20 guage. Is it as simple as exchanging the steel for lead shot or is the powder pressures different as well?
Im not goin to shoot steel through my old cooey, cause i dont wanna blow it up.
Any thoughts would be appreiciated

the plastic shotcups for steel shot are thicker than the ones for lead shot. Almost certainly different powder type and charge to give the steel a higher initial velocity

cheers mooncoon

What choke does your shotgun have? Steel shot shouldn't hurt the barrel unless it's full choke. If the barrel is full choke, you can have the choke reamed out to modified if you want to shoot steel through it.

My gun is a 20 guage model 84 cooeywith full choke, its a family heirloom and i didnt want to shoot it without getting a few opinions first. i think ill just keep the ammo up for sale on the EE.

thanks guys

Steel shot takes heavier wads.
Use lead shot wads and you risk damage to the bore fo the gun.
If you want to reload steel shot, get the latest lyman shotshell manual or get the ballistics products shotshell manual.
You should not attempt to substitute steel shot for lead in any load.

If you are talking about taking apart a live shell and substituting lead for steel, then you you can do it BUT the weight of the lead shot must be the same (or less), NOT VOLUME of shot in the shell. You will need to make up fibre spacers inside the plastic cup to take up the unused volume. You can make the spaces up by cutting down (maybe) 28 gauge fibre wads (if you can find them), or using 12 or 20 gauge fibre wads and take a hollow punch to them to make them the correct size.

The fibre wads under the shot is important, because most steel shot wads don't cushion the shot much because steel shot doesn't deform, and they need the room for a long shot column.

Otherwise, see posts above.

Quite honestly it is a lot of work and unless you have a loader for 3" 20 gauge shells, you won't be able to close up the shell properly, and it will open up.

Best solution is to buy some 20 gauge lead for targets, or if hunting, use Kent tungsten matrix shot rated for lead only guns.

Is you gun rated for 3" shells?
