Question About the SVT 40

Yesterday i bought a nice SVT 40 , a 1941 izzy

The question is it have the slide to put a scope mount but not the natch on the top ? anyone says why ?

Lots of them are like that, all depends on the factory that made them. Some of the later ones did away with the rails altogether.
 
From my knowledge they were all machined like that initially on both the SVT-38 and SVT-40. I don't think the notches were added until late 41/ early 42, because they were finding the scope mounts were sliding off and needed extra reinforcement, they were only added to SVT's that were test fired and had above average accuracy (circle k marking). During 1942, they stopped machining the rails into the receiver completely.

The notch is for locking the special mount in place under recoil, but it is not necessary to the use of the scope. Just remove the cross pin; the rails will keep it aligned, though it will slide under recoil.

Notches were put on designated marksman rifles because it was found that under these critical circumstances, it was best to have the scope locked down as much as possible.

Eventually they stopped cutting the rails altogether, as they were never issuing that many scopes (and many snipers went back to the Mosin rifle), and it saved a step in manufacture.
