i recently got my pal and have learned of some unregistered guns. i understand there is still an amnesty but it seems very vague as to whether or not i would fall under it. would i be able to register these guns without penalty?

copied from the rcmp's site

The amnesty applies to individuals who are taking steps to comply with the law and possess non-restricted firearms without a valid firearms licence, or individuals who hold a registration certificate along with a licence that expired after January 1, 2004.

The amnesty does not apply to individuals who:

* never held a firearms licence; or
* had a firearms licence or Firearms Acquisition Certificate that expired before January 2004; or
* possess restricted or prohibited firearms without a valid licence and/or registration certificate.

you can see how its unclear to me as i have "taken steps to comply with the law" but i also "never held a firearms license" before recently

also if i can, what would be the correct procedure? i understand the guns would need to be "verified" first then i could simply register them online. how do i go about getting them verified first without breaking the law if they are not in my possession?

highly unlikely. found locked up and forgotten in a diseased relatives attic

Are we talking long guns? If so, easy to deal with.

Measure the barrels, record serial numbers, model, etc. Basically have full info on the rifles ready to go.

Call CFC at 1-800-731-4000 1-4-2-1 to register long guns.

Tell the lady what you have, she'll give you the FRT numbers etc. and her verifier number and name.

Then, you go online and register them. You have to mention where they came from, just say from an old person who passed on, which is the truth.

You'll receive Reg Certs in the mail in a few weeks if all is well.

If there are no serial numbers, you tell them and they issue black stickers to stick to the receiver.

I think that even restricteds are easy to register, prohibs are another matter. From what I have seen, they stopped bothering with the stickers a while ago and just live with the fact that the gun has no number on it.

I registered two of my grandfathers guns that were from the 1930 and 1950 with no serial number. No problems at all. But they did send me stickers. this was three months ago.

I agree with everyone here, its really no big deal as long as its a long gun. Two days after I got my RPAL I was given a long forgotten rifle (free!) from a relative. I took it to a verifier, who are not allowed to charge for this service apparently, and then went online to register it. I got the card in the mail yesterday, no hassles whatsoever.

Did you have to tell exactly who gave it to you or "a relative" was good enough?
