I'm thinking of getting a barrel chambered in 338-300 SAUM, for my Savage 12 VLP. I'm making some assumptions here but if I seat them long it looks like 2700 fps wouldn't be out of the question for a 250 gr HPBT. That strikes me as being a really nice compromise between ballistics and barrel life.
Here's the crazy part (or maybe just plain smart), could I have a 338 RUM reamer run in about 0.76" short to create a similar chamber to 338-300 SAUM and then have a set of existing 338 RUM dies shortened the same amount to make a die to match the chamber?
Is this possible or am I just creating major headaches to save on the reamer and custom die set?
