i was fishing from my canoe on the weekend and spotted a good spot to hunt ducks. one of the landowners in the area has put up a sign that says "private property, baited area, no hunting of migratory birds".

Can I still hunt waterfowl as long as I stay 400m away from this area don't trespass on his land? I realized that he owns the land on part of the lake, but the lake is public property.

this is gonna be my first time duck hunting, i really don't know what i'm doing, so i guess i gotta learn on my own. i just don't wanna be breaking the rules. I called the mnr and they said i can hunt anywhere on that lake.

My understanding is that only the MNR can declare an area a Baited Area and post the sign. If this sign looks hand made I would suspect that the adjacent landowner does not like hunters or he is hunting himself. This would be an effective way to keep others out of your prime hunting spot.
I don't know what to tell you Ricco... prolly be a good idea to set up in another area? Or you could check for bait and if there is none just hunt and wait for the s**t storm that could develop.:runaway:

the sign was posted by the landowner, not the mnr. i called the local conservation office and they said im allowed to hunt anywhere on that lake. i'll probably go to a different spot on the lake, but because im in a canoe, my choice is really limited (for safety reasons wind waves etc.)

So I decided to take the canoe to that spot anyways for my first duck hunt. There were some good numbers of ducks, but I couldn't hit a dam thing. I think I wasnt leading them enough. I didnt realize how hard they would be to hit, guess I just need more practice. Took about 12 shots in an hour and missed them all.

Then a couple of guys in a motor boat come out and tell me that I'm on there property. I told him that I spoke to the ministry and was told that I was allowed to hunt on the lake. He says that there wrong, and that I could get in big #### for being there. Since the action started to slow down. I said fine, and started to paddle back to shore. Then another two guys in a motor boat come out and tell me the same thing. I know that the lake cannot be their property, but didnt think it was worth it so I left. I fish there all the time without being hassled.

The place I'm talking about is Lake Scugog, north of the Causeway on 7A and east of Island road. There is a small parking lot about 2km east of Island road and theres lots of duck there.

My left ear is still ringing a bit, hope it goes away. Next time I'm wearing hearing protection!

Hopefully you got the name of the DNR person you spoke to originally. Maybe check with them one more time just to be certain. So NEXT time you go there and these guys show up, get the number off their boat and THEN ask for their names. Keep the DNR number handy with your cell phone, and tell them you're phoning them now to resolve it. If they don't give you their names and/or the property, then call the OPP/RCMP.

I think in time u will have a much better shot. Just keep at it and you be will better and be able to hit those ducks.

It sucks to hear that people are trying to disturb your right to hunt there. I am not familiar with that area but as grouse man said, I would confirm one more time and go out there and have fun. Maybe if they come back pretend like you don't know english and they will eventually leave.

Nobody owns the lake there and thats for sure. When are you going again? If on a weekend I would be happy to come out with you if your interested so atleast you can have some backup if these yahoos start to really bother you.

Scugog does have some property lines that extend out into the water. Owned by hunt clubs. And some of those hunt clubs have baiting permits.

I would be double checking everything again, now that you have said where you are hunting.

Contact the same CO you talkd too before,, ask him/her again about the spot you are referring too. If he says you are good to go,, tell him what happened when you went out there. Then ask him too accompany you out there for a hunt because you are sure you will be approached again!
