Question about what the 870 and other numbers mean

Hi i know this migth sound dumb but i am new to guns and want to learn a little more about them before i buy my first one. So i was wondering what the 870 and other numbers stand for.

Basically it was just a number they picked. It's the fourth redesign of the Remington pump shotgun, and is the best selling shotgun ever.
