Fellas, sorry if this has been posted before but the search here is useless.:D On your main go to hunting rifles, do you make sure that they have iron sights as a back up in case of a scope tragedy???

I almost always go hunting with someone, so if my scope would ever happen to fail, I could just use the other guys gun. For my own guns though, all have iron sights except my Tikkas.

Nope. No irons for me. But then again....I ALWAYS have a back-up at camp.
Deer season: 7/08 (this year!), .44 Ruger Semi, and usually a 270 or a lever.
Moose Season: 300 SA, 300 Ultramag
Both seasons: 12 Guage. (Ducks during deer season, Grouse during moose, slugs in case my back-up needs a back-up. ;)

I always have a SG with my rifle. I do a bit of grouse hunting and can use slugs in it in a pinch if need be. Don't like open sights and would have no way to take the scope off if it did fail.

On a travel hunt, I will pack a back up rifle usually set up for longer shots. However, it will also serve for walkabout hunting in a pinch.

I hunt with common factory chamberings and same brand rifles in case I need parts.

either a spare scope, presighted, with QD rings, or iron sights. My main gun is a Ruger Frontier and i can use either a scout scope or rear-mounted 3x9.
Backup is a 45-70 guide gun with ghost ring sights and an XS systems scout scope setup. On the guide gun I'm thinking of going to the new XS full length rail so can use either a rear mounted scope, scout scope/red dot or ghost ring setup.

I sight my CZ's in with irons after Ive developed a load for point of aim at 100 yds then remount the scope and verify its still on (quick release rings) . Its probably a moot point as I always have a spare rifle in camp but makes me feel better. I have a rem 700 that has no irons and I use it just as much as any of the others. Once again its a personal preference thing:)

No irons. I prefer the cleaner lines; plus I never practise open-sighted, so I couldn't hit crap without the scope anyways. Amd, I have no backup hunting gun to bring with me - oOo! Living on the edge :)

Seriously, I've never had a scope malfunction out huntin, and neither has anyone else I know, so I'm not at all concerned.

I used to think that irons were an important part of an "all-around/go to" rifle but not so much anymore. If I have scope failure I'll either borrow a gun or have a backup with me.

Having said that, I still think they look good! ;)

I like open sights, but I think if I were going on a hunting trip I would rather bring a spare lightweight scope with me if I were worried about backup.

When I hunted, my main rifle was a Browning A-bolt [no iron sites] composite stalker .300 Win Mag with 26" barrel. Scoped with B&L Elite 4000 2.5-10x40mm. Back-up rifle was a Winchester 70 XTR [with iron sites] .30-06 with 24" barrel. Scoped with a B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm. Shot 180's in the .300 Win Mag and 165's in the .30-06.

my main hunting rifle has a front site but no rear site so i keep a spare weaver 2.5 power handy incash the 3-9 craps out

My go-to big game rifle is an "as issued" Lee Enfield. Throw it in the truck, on and off the ATV and bring back a Deer.. The original battlesights work fine out to 100yds and I don't sit there wondering if I accidently bumped the scope etc.
Pretty hard to break irons!
That being said- small game almost everything is scoped, different ballgame completely.

I would take an extra scope (pre sighted in) on weaver style bases and Zee rings.
