I just ordered a Nikon scope that was on sale at Cabelas with the intension of slapping it on an old Mossberg .22.
I have another mossy setup as well and this one I have a dovetail to picatinny adaptor , then weaver type rings.
This time I was going to try the air rifle / rimfire rings that attach directly to the 3/8 dovetail grooves.
I've never used these type of rings before. Who uses them? Who's a fan of them?
I guess I'm just a creature of habit and a bit reluctant to try something new.
To me they just look flimsier , but they'r probably not.
What's a decent brand that's economical . Any suggestions? Opinions?

I think most people who shoot CZ or Anschutz rifles use rings for the dovetail grooves. That's what I use. The need for Weaver/Picatinny style rings are obvious for heavier-recoiling rifles, but on a .22LR they are not necessary to keep the scope firmly in place, without fear of moving. The only caveat I can think of at the moment is that Nikon scopes often have a larger than average ocular bell and as a result higher scope rings may be needed.

A lot of air rifle users as well as rimfire shooters have used UTG two-piece rings that will keep the scope in place without fear of moving. They cost about $20 from Amazon. (Spring piston air rifles have much more recoil than any rimfire.) I have used them on springers and .22LR and can attest that they will do the job. BKL rings are very good as they will easily attach to both 11mm and 3/8" grooves. Other quality rings include Burris, Leupold, and Talley.

I use this Leupold see-through scope mount set on my Savage with dovetails. It is not a low-mount but I like it because I can use the iron sights for short range shots less than 25 meters. I use the scope for longer shots. Being able to see the irons gives me peace of mind that I've got the irons as back up sights. Very solid scope mounts that grip the dovetails very tightly.
