Question...I just got back from the range where I bought a set of Weaver Grand Slam 2 piece bases (Dovetail steel) for my stevens 200. No problem mounting the front base and ring....but the rear base looks kinda wierd...where the screws clamp onto the dovetail hangs over the reciever and over top of the bolt?? It hangs over the reciever by over a quarter inch...is this the correct way to mount or should I swicth it around....but it puts the rings further apart and may not be able to mount my scope.

Any help is appreciated

Part numbers are as follows

Bases as per Weaver website....48906

And rings 49204

theres is no problem with flipping the rear base around.
as for the overhang, youd be suprised - some brand bases are just very poorly designed. even the Leupold QRW base overhangs the receiver as well, this is why i went with Warne bases.

the rear Warne base looks like this:

dont worry about putting the rear base further apart - the rear base is not the problem, its the fact that the front base is so far ahead that you will usually have to move a short tube scope so far back that the front ring is 1mm from the scope's objective bell. the Savage receiver is exactly 1/2" longer than a comparable Remington 700 action.

i lucked out with my Savage and the bases/rings/scope i chose that i was just barely able to mount my scope far enough back as i needed. i can easily see how with a slight variation in base/ring/scope dimensions it would not give enough room, even with a short action. if i had to do it over again with a Savage i would order a one-piece weaver base from Brownells which would allow me to mount the optics wherever i wanted.
