I am looking to put a small but effective scope on my Remington 7400 Woodsmaster 30-06. I have learned that i am NO good whatsoever with iron sights (too many misses). I would like a scope that is compact, great field of view and easy to pickup trotting (or running) deer while dogging. Any suggestions? I have looked at some of the holo sights like the one Browning now makes but i don't think it can take the recoil of the 30-06. Again, i am not looking for anything high end here as the max shot might be 125yds in bush type situations.

Thx

I would go for a red dot when running the dogs. I've been hunting with a dogging crew for the last 3 seasons. My first season I used a bolt action with a 4x scope and found it was to much magnification and not enough field of view. I couldn't hit any running deer.

I bought a bushnell red dot for $100 and the next day I got a doe at less than 20 yards at a dead sprint. Most of the guys in the crew shoot a 7600 (pump) in 3006 or 270 or 308 with great success. The 7400 should suit you very well with a red dot.

There is nothing quicker for dogging than a red-dot. A 7400 is a quick gun and you will be able to get off that second shot quickly, so you want a scope that will allow you to find the deer quickly...like one with no magnification. Most of the ones I've seen have a 30mm window, but it sounds like you would be better off with a 35 or 40mm. A 1.5x4 or similar scope is not compact, its more expensive, and difficult to pick up a running deer compared to a red-dot. Sure, if you see a deer 200 yards away you're going to wish you had your 1.5x4 but if the majority of your shots are close bush shots than a red-dot will serve you well. Won't break the bank either. I use one on my Winchester 88 in .308 and it's my go-to gun when hunting tight cover. Go for the Tasco for affordability, I know it's a low-end brand but I have one and love it. I tried the BSA but I didn't like it.

I know you say you're no good with "open sights", but have you tried a peep/aperture sight like the Williams FP?

Williams makes a very effective and small peep for the 7400, I believe
"WGRS 7400" is the part No. (Also fits the 7600, 750's) Utilizes the rear pair of pre-drilled scope mount holes on the top of the receiver - no drilling or tapping required - but do remove the original Remington rear sight and fill the holes with grub screws. Combine that with a larger (3/32") front bead (Williams. Lyman, Marbles, etc.) and the Remington becomes very fast.

I commenced my working career as a surveyor, (back in the pre-laser day) so squinting through optics was a pretty easy move for me. My 7600 wears a Leupold 1-4x VX-II in Leupold QR mounts which is very compact. I leave it set at 1X and so far haven't had any problems hitting deer on the move ...
even a couple on the fly with a hound behind them. A pair of Butler flip-up scope caps helps when its raining or snowy.

Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm mounted right on the deck with Weaver low rings.

The two above are still mounted too high.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think the red dot will be my choice just for the compact nature of them. We hunt in an area that is laden with Spurce and Balsalm so at some points the dogging is thru very thick cover and i don't want the scope to be continuously hanging up on scrub... So that being said, do i have to worry about the recoil of the 30-06 knocking the scope off center?

Thx

I used a bushnell reddot for a few years on my 3006 semi for dogging and I found it worked great I found it was very fast to get on a moving target (running deer) it withstood the recoil with no problems very inexpensive $80 new

The red-dot will be fine with the 30.06 recoil. A guy at my camp has a BLR in 30.06 with a red-dot on it and he has had no problems.
