I am considering a Leupold 1.5-5x20mm for my new rifle Iam getting as I think it will suit the rifle look wise and be more than enough magnification as 300yards will be a rare long shot for this rifle. My question is how bright and user friendly are these scopes in low light woods conditions? Thanks.

I have one on my 416 Rigby. I walked back to camp in RSA after dark and had the scope turned down all the way in case of a chance encounter with rhino. I was blown away at how long I could still make use of it after the sun set (and in RSA when the sun sets it's like it rolled off a table - no lingering twilight). I've said it before but it bears repeating - as a general purpose hunting scope the vari x III 1.5-5x is the best scope out there. If I could only have one hunting scope it would be the 1.5-5x Leupold.

I have to agree.I have one on my 375 H+H,It is a great scope.Low light, bad weather it works perfect. Two Alaskan Bear hunts,Yukon Moose hunt it has never let me down.

Quite the opposite experience. Had a Vari-X III 1.5-5x20 and cranked to 5 it was unusable in twilight conditions. At 1.5, it was only acceptable. A great scope for sure, but I replaced mine with a 3-9x40 and I am much happier.

My advice, since it seems the differences of opinion are significant: go to a shop at twilight and ask to look through them outside. I know at least 2 shops around my place that will let you do this.

I agree, I find 20 mm scopes to be disappointingly dim in low light. Change that 1.5-5 for a 1.75-6 X and I'm happy. Well, at least happier.

Wow completely oposite end of the spectrum answers lol Unfourtunetly I live in a small town with no good gun stores around and usually buy all my stuff online so trying it is out the window. Maybe just have to buy it and draw my own conclusions.
