question for all of the sks and red rifle owners......

hey all fellow gunnutz, i just purchased my first red rifle, a beautiful chinese sks, and i had a question that i hope somebody can help me out with. i tried using the search function, but no matter what i tried, i could not find anything.

my question is this: what i the best/easiest way to clean an sks after firing corrosive ammo? i have never had to clean a rifle after firing corrosive ammo so i have not the first clue as to how to properly go about this.

any and all help would be greatly appreciated. thanks all.

Well, each person has is own way to do. Here's mine, i field strip the rifle(removing bolt and gas tube and piston). With a funnel, i poor boiling water down the bore from breech end. This will dissolve the corrosive salt. I wipe bore with a couple of dry patchs. If i shot less 200rds, i dont do further cleaning with bored solvent, i run a slightly oiled patch in the bore and that's it. I also flush with water the gas tube and the piston wiping the part dry after,no oil on theses components. I wipe the bolt and the inside of receiver with a rag and some hot water, drying and oiling slightly. If i have shot manys rounds, after the water flush, i use bore cleaner to clean barrel and gas tube and run fews patchs to dry but i always finish with an oily patch down the bore until next shooting.
This procedure may seem long but its not, after few times, its a straight procedure. I clean my sks and cz858 that way and work perfect for me.:)
 
when using the advance search function, you need to expand the search period to more than "a week ago" .
 
Many ways to do it. Your best bet to go to youtube.com and put in your search criteria or SKSboards.com.
Also you can listen to Crutton advise of changing your search option.
 
Boiling water works great because it evaporates quickly, but I find that flushing the barrel and gas system with Windex or even cold river water (in the boonies, camping) will suffice to nuetralize the salts in corrosive ammo. As long as you use a water based solution, you'll be ok.

The corrosive ammo will eat away at the barrel, it'll just take longer. The real issue (I think) is the gas tube. The corrosive ammo can really do some damage to that if not cleaned. However, my SKS has sat for 2 weeks after firing some 300 rnds of 70's Czech surplus through it and I haven't had a problem.

I think that the issue about cleaning cropped up when people shot thousands of rounds through an SKS and never bothered to clean it. ANY rifle (possibly .22 excepted) will corrode if not cleaned at least once in a while.
 
I just bought my first rifle today too!!!
A 52 Tula SKS, and I read a bunch of threads about first time cleaning. I am going to go the mineral spirits/rags/steamer route, but everyone only says how to clean it. What am I supposed to do with the bucket of cosmoline/water/varsol mix I have when I'm done? Evaporate it, dig it, and garbage it?
 
I do almost exactly what svt1940 does. The other thing I do is make sure you get water down the gas port and add some oil/solvent after. The part that the gas tube attaches to at the front. I've seen where that can get rusty real quick if neglected.
