I'm seriously thinking about getting a Fabarm 14"er, so I decided to take TSE's rental Fabarm out for a spin. Shooting slugs was exactly what I expected but I was a bit surprised with the results with 00 buck. I was getting like 12" - 14" patterns at 10 - 15 metres. I was expecting to see those kind of pattern sizes at maybe 25 or so metres, but that's quite a bit looser than I expected to see at close-up ranges, even with the 14" bbl... Now at 25m.. well most of the pellets were off the paper all together.

I did have to use their Winchester range ammo, so I don't know if that's the problem or not. What is your experience with the Fabarm shortys? Do they prefer certain brands of ammo? Or does that missing 4-1/2" really make that big of a difference in patterns?

thanks for your help Guys.

One of the nice things about the Fabarm is the external threads on the barrel for choke tubes (or the muzzle brake).

Did you get to try some of the different chokes on it?

You can also use a longer barrel if need be.

Didn't think to ask them if they had any available for their rental gun. Good idea though. I'll have to ask the next time I'm in. As for the longer barrel, will I see any difference between a 14" cylindar bore and a 18-1/2" cyylindar bore?

Barrel length does not affect pattern, choke does. If you want to minimize the spread of shot you need to increase the choke.
FWIW I used the range gun on our SIGARMs shotgun course and when we patterned the guns it actually shot tighter than most of the guns on the course.

Thanks redleg, that confirms what I thought I already knew. I guess I was second guessing myself aster reading posts from "experts" on other sites that were basically saying that you should be able to get 8" - 10" patterns with 00 buck from a cylinder bore at 15 to 20 yards.

Do you know when you guys are getting more of 14" Fabarms with ghost rings in?

They will be arriving in the spring.

"Shooting slugs was exactly what I expected"? How did it do with slugs? Accurate? How is the recoil at 14" + muzzle break? Also can you screw in a choke + muzzle break or is it one or the other?

JNG - Slugs were reasonably accurate, at least I thought so. I'm not a practiced shot with slugs, so I was happy with a 6" or so group at 20 metres. Recoil was a ma-fugger, but not unmanageable. I didn't try out either the muzzle brake or chokes so I can't say how they shoot. But I did take a close look at both the screw-in (or should I say screw-on) chokes and the brake. And it's one or the other, you can't use both a choke tube and the brake. The choke tubes screw on the same way as the brake.

I just picked one of these up and shot it for the first time yesterday and was surprised I could only get 2 shells into it, does anyone know if there is a plug that can be removed so you can fit alt least another shell in it?

I don't think the 14" units come with a plug, but they do have a stiff mag spring. You can always unscrew the cap at the end of the mag tube and have a look, though. The tube should hold 5 rounds of 2-3/4", but on the one I shot the 5th was a bit tough to load in.

It does come with a plug, and you can remove it. Been there, done that.
It's an aluminium rod.

Earlier, I was not trying to suggest that a longer barrel will improve your pattern, but just mentioning another option on these shotguns.

Aluminun, eh? fancy-schmancy Italians... Well I do feel better knowing that i'll be able to use it for duck hunting now. And all joking aside, I guess a fella could always buy a 26" barrel and use that gun for birds, so your point about buying different barrels is well taken, thanks.

Buckshot doesn't pattern to well in a cylinder bore shotgun out past about 10 yards.

I did some test awhile back, and found that at 25 metres, the pattern woudln't worth spit.

Whaqt do you want the gun for?

I need a reason to buy a gun? What, you workin' for the CFC or something? :p

I'm just yankin'... actually the 14" gun would probably only see field use as a slug gun for backpacking and camping in bear country. And other than that just a toy, I guess. No particular use in mind. Just looks fun to own
