I have a winchester model 70 classic sporter boss, in 7mm magnum.
I have this rifle listed for sale but i have a couple questions
If you've owned a BOSS equiped rifle and had the BOSS removed, what differences did the performance of your rifle exhibit.
I am looking at maybe moving up to 300 win mag with no boss and am wondering if i should just keep the 7mm and get rid of the boss. I really like the accuracy I can achieve with it on the rifle and that it allows me to adjust point of impact when changing bullet wieght without touching my scope. However the boss makes her a little too long for the thicker bushed areas I have been hunting. i really like this rifle but am wondering about performance without the boss
anyone care to comment?

My cousin has one of the original Browning ones. He seems to love it, but I thought that it made it too loud to hunt with. And as it is in .270, the recoil reduction is not really an issue.
As far as your actual question, i don't think he ever removed it, so I cannot answer. Sorry.

the boss does make it extra loud.... however, it does not seem to spook game, it seems to freeze em in thier tracks. I took 2 bucks this year at close range within seconds of each other ( 2 buck bag limit for the region) out of a group of 5 bucks. After the first shot they all just froze, seemingly confused, I was able to rack another round and take my pick. the remaining 3 still stood there until i stood up from my hiding place. the movement scared em, not the sound of the shot.

I wasn't concerned about spooking game. i figure that after you kill it, you couldn't spook it with rap music!
I was more concerned about my hearing. I ALWAYS wear protection at a range, but not when hunting.

boss

I have a Browning 338win mag with an adjustable boss works great without it my gun would be ammo specific and have considerable more recoil. In my eyes if you arte gonna get a new gunyou might aswell get one with a boss as then your gun will shoot all grains of ammo with great accuracy. My browning will shoot clover leafs with every grain of bullets i own and thats alot as i hand loaded 180gr barnes xlc boat tails and 225barnes xlc's as well as accubond 200gr and factory winchester 200gr soft points and the federal 250gr trophy bonded they all are capible of clover leafs with a small adjustment of the boss, try that with a non boss equipt rifle.
I can not comment on the cr brake as they were out of stock and i have not recieved mine in the mail yet

Like everyone else I found the BOSS too loud. I replaced it with the CR option, which comes with each BOSS rifle. The accuracy remains and you can still tune the rifle. The noise level is down noticeably, however, the recoil is back.

I like the CR option better. I hope this helps.

Cheers!

To twist on a .30 cal tube you will also have to re-bed the action, something you would likely do anyway. The reason is that a softer bedding compound is used for boss rifles. Browning recomended Devcon Flexane 80 putty to me when I restocked my 30-06 boss and it works just fine.I don't believe you can just unscrew the boss and expect any kind of accuracy.

The BOSS was another gimmick; any decent rifle can be set up to shoot any consistent ammo. Barrel harmonics are an arcane science, just screwing a brake forward and back at the muzzle is not going to make a huge difference. If you are really concerned about getting maximum accuracy potential, handload to suit your rifle. There is no short cut that will ever equal carefully tuned and tested handloads for accuracy.

I have a Browning A Bolt Eclipse with the BOSS on it. The rifel is heavy to begin with, so recoil is not an issue. I use the brake model at the range for load development and sighting in, and then put the CR on for hunting. I've checked and there is no difference in Point of Impact with the CR or the Standard. I have not shot it without the BOSS.

I actually liked the BOSS when I first got the rifle I didn't have time to reload, and I was able with very little adjusting to get Federal Premiums to shoot three shot groups of .625" which is for sure minute of moose. The ported BOSS is loud in the field without protection, but I don't use it anymore, so it's not an issue. Besides, any time you burn 75+ grains of gunpowder and force it down a 30 calibre hole, it has to make some noise.

Let us know how it works out.

Had a super grade in 06 with the boss. My ears almost bled when I touched off a round. Even with ear plugs they would ring like mad after a shot. I ordered up a CR sleeve (conventional recoil) that replaced the brake model.
That fixed up the excessive noise, but it seemed like you could get the barrel tuned at a certain temperature and it would change again when it was cooler the next time you went out to punch paper. The barrel was 22", if I remember right the boss adds close to another 4" to that. 26" doesn't sound like alot but try to pack it in tight brush all day and you might as well have been carrying an 8' 2x4"
I eventually had a machinist make a sleeve to replace the works and look like a normal barrel. It would still shoot 1" groups. If you only have it for punching paper I could see it useful, but you need to tune it for each load just like any other rifle so why bother. It's just a marketing ploy pain in the rump.
Trade that gun off for a 2.5x8 vari x III. The best thing I ever did!
