I bought a brand-new Rem 700 5R milspec a few months back and have been having some issues with it. When feeding rounds off the magazine it was initially very, very rough, requiring a lot of exertion and leaving deep scratches down the length of the case. If you just laid the shell on top of the follower without pushing it under the mag lips, it fed just fine with no scratches. This is my first Rem 700 so I had no idea what to expect in terms of fit and finish, mag geometry etc

I took it back to the shop I bought it from and their in-house guy found that the mag lips were much too sharp, and after using some 600 grit sandpaper to polish them up along with the follower, things are much improved.

However, I'm still seeing some scratches on the case, as well as some small 1-2mm cuts parallel to to rim about 1/2" up from the rim. Also, it is stil much rougher to strip rounds off the mag than any other bolt gun I've ever fired, and there's a faint but clear metal-on-metal squealing sound when you load a round smartly.

I'm still not quite happy with it, but I'm hoping those of you with 5R's can tell me if I'm just being anal, or if this is something to keep harping on. I plan on using this as the base for a build project, so want to make sure I haven't got a Friday afternoon lemon before I sink a grand or so into the project.

Any input is much appreciated!

The magazine lips on my 5R are just fine. Not sharp, feeds well, no noises.

However I do get a slight scratch on the case, from the spring pushing the next round up and into the bolt as I cycle the action. The leading edge of the bolt face is rubbing on the case wall.

I'm sure this doesn't really help you. But it sounds like you have already addressed the issue.

All metal/mechanical things should run smoothly and never be forced. If you find metal shavings, hear noises, or just can't get it to budge...something is wrong.

sit and watch band of brothers series once or twice while cycling the action, on an obviously empty rifle, kind of like lapping without the compounds. this may help "break in the action".

My first 700 SPS tactical .308 had the same problem at first. After a month and a half of shooting, the scratches and harsh sound went away (this is after about 200-300 rounds later btw)

I sold it shortly after. And now I have a Savage 10 FCP.

5r

I have owned my 5R for three years now and it's been an excellent rifle since new it shot great groups from new with hand loads even out a 600 yards at Volks range it was competive as a stock rifle it functioned smoothly and I have never had any bullet feeding problems ,I have since modified it custom match barrel accurised the action jewel trigger and a nightforce br scope , it won me third place on the last match at Volks in ftr , So modding it to a competive F class rifle has been worth every penny , too bad yours has issues I know a few other fellows that own them as well and they have had no issues ,the 5R IMO is a great platform on wich to build a custom rifle.

My action was pretty stiff, and the lips are a 'little' sharp, but I bought a couple snap caps, and have literally cycled the action popping those snap caps thru, several thousand times, to loosen it up, smooth it out. and it's totally worth it. My snap caps are scratched to hell, no big gouges or nothing.. if you're actually losing metal, then i'd be concerned.

This is a common problem and usually buffing and polishing will take care of the problem, some scratching will alway show on the cases so don't think that you will have no signs of wear on the cases when they are stripped from the feed lips of any action. Some show more than others.

To fine tune my reload i decided to make a dummy with an underseated bullet . ( very long COAL ) .I then use a felt pen on the bullet to darken it and see the rifling marks afterward.

When the time came to feed the dummy , i was unable to close the bolt... and even open it...!!!

Ouch.

I had to use a rod to push the dummy out of the rifle.

Investigation began .I measured OAL of the cartridge , check for obstruction in the chamber , cleaned and lubed the bolt ...

Finally my mistake was : the use of a range case.

When doing so , i usually full lenght resize the cases .But i just resized the neck of this one in my Lee collet die.

When i compared a Winchester case shot from my rifle and another one from the range it was then evident.

The very close tolerance from the 700SS 5R ask for close fitting too.

You can see on that photo the longer neck and the shorter shoulder of my case . ( On the right in that photo . Both cases are Winchester. )

So , be aware of the tight fitting of your 5R and be assured it will settle and gain smoothness over time.

Hope it helps.
