...thinking of purchasing this light system for my 870. Curious as to whether or not one can easily remove the actual light assembly and just use the fore-end itself and save wear and tear on light system.

thx. Mad Mikey

Yes, the light will just unscrew out of the forend. But by taking the light out you're going to risk getting contamination (dirt etc) on the contacts. I have seen guys put plastic plugs in there though.

As for wear and tear though, I don't think it's all that necessary. I've had the same 6p for 8 years and I've never tried to be "nice" to it. It's been a pocket light, mounted on my C7 barrel and mounted in a surefire forend on my 670 when I was in the military. Since I retired it's been in a squeeze mount an mounted on my M500 rail. It's seen constant hard military and civii use the whole time I have had it and I've never even had to change the bulb..

So don't worry about taking it easy with it, mount it and enjoy it.

Thx. for the info guys and it looks like a surefire purchase in the near future. The reason I was asking was I have a multi-use 870. When at home and in the backcountry it wears an 18" barrel and hopefully soon a surefire, but I also have a 28" barrel I put on it and shoot clays quite regularly. You guys would kill to see the looks I get when I bring my 870 to shoot clays wearing a tacstar side saddle, speedfeed pistol grip stock etc. :D I still seem just as able as the next guy to hit them though!!! Imagine when I show-up with a surefire fore-end  :dancingbanana: Best place to buy??? Wolverine?

Thx. again,
Mad Mikey.
