I have a question for the gunsmiths and military people in the know about the differences between the 7.62 Nato and .308 Winchester.
Some reloaders and shooters say they are the same but I'm not convinced as the drawings of the case show slight differences and especially the chamber dimensions can be very different.
I am going to be cautious in my reloading and start out with loads that are rather mild to fire form my brass and then use starting .308 Win. loads after neck sizing the brass fired in that chamber. Military brass is thicker so any loads would have to be reduced even if it was loaded into a .308 Win rifle.
I have seen where commerecial .308 Win. is 10,000 to 12,000 psi higher than the 7.62 Nato stuff so that in itself tells me there should be some diligent reloading done and have the headspace checked and do a chamber cast to find out for sure. As the title says I am looking for an informed answer from professional gunsmiths and military people.
