I have a question for the gunsmiths and military people in the know about the differences between the 7.62 Nato and .308 Winchester.
Some reloaders and shooters say they are the same but I'm not convinced as the drawings of the case show slight differences and especially the chamber dimensions can be very different.
I am going to be cautious in my reloading and start out with loads that are rather mild to fire form my brass and then use starting .308 Win. loads after neck sizing the brass fired in that chamber. Military brass is thicker so any loads would have to be reduced even if it was loaded into a .308 Win rifle.
I have seen where commerecial .308 Win. is 10,000 to 12,000 psi higher than the 7.62 Nato stuff so that in itself tells me there should be some diligent reloading done and have the headspace checked and do a chamber cast to find out for sure. As the title says I am looking for an informed answer from professional gunsmiths and military people.

I would be inclined to use military brass, and a load to duplicate the performance of NATO ball. I would also watch the brass very carefully for incipient separations, and neck size only if the cases fit the chamber. If they have to be sized, do the minimum for the cases to fit.

Learn something new every day. I wasn't aware there was a difference 'till I saw this thread. A quick check in the latest Hornady manual, case dimensions appear to be the same, the only significant difference seems to be slightly lower powder charges listed for the 7.62x51 Nato where the same bullet weights are used. Also the variety of bullets listed for use in the 7.62 is considerably less than those listed for the .308 Win. Last but just as important, the firearms used for each individual set of reload info.

I don't have the exact link for it know but on the SAMMI site they had a list of dangerous missfeed combinations 5.56 and 223 was listed but I don't thing 7.62 nato and 308 win was listed.

That said I have generaly not liked GI brass, pressures show up too soon due to the generally ticker brass
