the Mosin M44 i just got delivered from SIR is a 1945 dated post-war one.
i have a couple other Mosins - one of them also a 1945 one - and the stocks are dark, beaten up, and 'puffy' (ie: left proud around butt plate, dog collar sling eyelets, etc.

the Mosin i just got has a much lighter colored stock of mystery wood. the entire stock is much slimmer along the entire length... i picked it up and shouldered it and the whole gun seemed lighter and handier, i was wondering WTF was going on until i picked up one of my other Mosins and realised the new one's stock has a significantly thinner, flatter contour. there is no 'proud' wood around the buttplate and metalwork, its all flush.

my other Mosins look like this:

this new one looks like this (started disassembling it to clean off all the cosmo):

can anyone shed some light on why the stock on this one is so different than all the other Mosins ive handled? almost looks like a Polish stock on a Soviet Mosin.

**edit
also just noticed it is a single ear front bayo mount, as opposed to my other 1945 which is a double ear.
there is no toe splice.

Where's Izhy stamp - an arrow in a triangle? What I see is some lame hammer and sickle crest (lame in a sense that it's commy, no offense for the gun or its owner!)

These are al refurbs coming from SIR et al. Some of them have newly made (1970's era) stocks, sometimes of beech. that's what you have. Looks like it's import marked too - that's unfortunate.

the arrow in the triangle towards the rear. its all stamped Izhevsk.
all the proof marks are Soviet as well.

thanks Claven - i ordered an extra Mosin as a plinker, i guess this one just volunteered.
since the stock isnt worth much im going to strip it and refinish it.
the bore is mint.

No, that's an American import mark. SIR gets them from Century in the US. P&S and Tradex get theirs direct from the Ukraine, so no import marks thus far.

I would not refinish the stock were I you. If you strip it, it's beech and it'll go white it'll be so blonde. It's correct as it is.

too late - stripped it before i read your response.
sanded/steel wooled and darkening it a bit with stain as we speak.
the wood, believe it or not, was a sortof light walnut color underneath all that crap.
i just absolutely cant stand that orange color. reminds me of an SKS
*shudder*

its just going to be a plinker. plus there were what, 40 million of these made? not too worried about collector value on this one :)
