Hello everybody,
My questions at this time is "is legal to use a smoke grenade made by sport smoke while practicing with timed pop up targets?" and "Is it legal to put the said grenade in a metal casing to make it look like a M18 smoke grenade, so that the metal case will contain any fire and hopefully not cause a giant fire?"

Proper retail smoke grenades like Sport Smoke which are made for paintball etc. are not illegal in Canada, they are cool burning so they don't start fires easily, however, if you are discharging one in a location where it is prohibited regionally or municipally or where someone might see it and call the fire dept/911, they won't be too happy with you when they race out there with sirens going.

Your best idea would be to call your local fire dept and ask them about legal paintball style smoke grenade use in your location, it may be limited in your region or municipality, if it isn't then the fire dept will probably want to be called before using them so that they know to disregard 911 calls regarding it. And if they tell you not to set them off, don't.

And if a grenade somehow starts a fire, you can be charged, and the fines can be huge. Check with established paintball places for best use and deployment of grenades.

so it is not illegal eh?
I just need to find a secluded area where fire is allowed, and legal to discharge a firearm, can I go to the desert area of Alberta, while finding a hill with a thick diameter, and do so legally?

Re-read my post.

As I mentioned in my post, make sure they are not prohibited for release in your regional district. You may be able to find this information online if you know what regional district you are in as they probably have a website.
The laws go from municipality, to regional district, to province.

And call your local FD and let them know what you are doing. Outdoor paintball arenas that allow smoke grenades do this ahead of time, and they have signs up, so people driving by know where the smoke is coming from.
Otherwise, if anyone from land or air sees the smoke, they may call 911, and when the FD gets there, they won't be too happy with you for the false call.

Just because an area allows camp fires etc. that doesn't mean it is ok for smoke grenades. Grenades let off huge amounts of smoke that can cover a square km and look like a forest fire, not like a small camp fire and its little wisp of smoke.

The FD may want you to use the colored smoke grenades so most people won't mistake it for a fire (white) or rescue signal (orange).

If you are not willing to call the FD, then expect at minimum a minor charge when you get caught.
