Question on 22 long

Hey all, I got a nice little belgium 22 single shot here that I was planning on letting my son use when he gets older. The rifle is defiantly old and the barrel is marked 22l which I would assume it is chamber in 22 long and not 22 long rifle. Is it ok to shoot 22 long rifle out of it? I have done some research and found the 22l is slightly shorter round than 22lr and shot a lighter bullet. Any thoughts?

I don't think you can shoot .22lr out of a .22l gun reliably, but maybe with the single shot it will work.

The long cartridge has the same case length as a long rifle but with a short bullet(typically 29 grains). Test fit a long rifle cartridge to see if the LR cartridge chambers completely. The only thing that would make it unsafe to fire with an LR is if the rifle was not proofed for the more powerful cartridge.

I have an antique .22 and LRs are NOT on the menu. Many reports of them being shot loose in short order with LRs.

They fit and chamber; but .22LR develops substantially more pressures.

For older guns like the Favorite and other tilting block/swinging block; hinge actions etc that were designed around the original .22, it is not recommended to fire LRs. Especially high velocity stuff.

CB Longs are all I would run in many. As always, "Your Mileage May Vary"
