Hi guys. I just picked up a sported 41 Maltby. The serial numbers have an overstrike. The barrel # is 11004 and the receiver is A1104. The confusion is that on both pieces the first #1 is an over strike over a #2. To the best of my knowledge, 41 Maltbys would not have a 2 as the first digit. The overstrike is with the same style of punch as the original. This would make me believe that the barrel is original. But,, it is a 2 groove barrel. I didn't think that they used them that early. I believe they were tested and approved by then though. The bore is very worn and no FTR stamp.
The poor old girl has been around the block and lots of rust. It will need a makeover. If the #s are correct, I make it to be one of the very few first #4s produced for issue in 41. I am considering redoing the whole thing to make it like new as it is far from original.
Any thoughs?
Thanks

Would you be able to provide a picture ? I have seen a few interesting mis-strikes on some firearms I have owned in the past and it just reminds you these were made by human beings just like us.

It's in the varsol bath right now and I am trying to get some of deep rust off of it. I'll get some pictures up tonight.
