Hi folks,

I have 2 scopes I'm looking to buy flip open lens coves for, a 10x40mm fixed and a 6x38. But the caps I've found online are being listed as either 39.9 or 40.8 mm and then 37.7 or 38.5mm.

Which ones will fit, slightly larger or slightly smaller? My guess is to go with the slightly larger, as the caps have to go over the housing, but I'm new to scopes (more of a holo/red dot kind of guy) so I thought it best to ask here.

Thanks.

Go with caps that are slightly smaller. The caps are usually rubber and will stretch to fit. If its tight...warming them up with a heat gun or hot water will do the trick.. If you go with caps that are too big...even slightly....they may slide or sometimes even slip right off when deploying the flip.

If it's the Butler Creek ones, they have the new multi-flex ones that are designed to fit a small range of optics per size. They're more rubberized than the original ones.

Also, those folks who's Butler Creek caps no longer stay open, there's a way to repair them. Most times the spring has worn away part of the rubber that holds it under tension when closed. Pretty crappy design but it can be repaired with just a set of pliers. :)

:) the man..

Measure the outside diameter of your scope with calipers, and buy to fit.

10x40mm scope is lens size not housing.

I had a set of caps that seemed to have stretched a bit over time, and started to slide off, a wrap of electric tape fixed it up.

Try and fit at the store if you can or buy two and see which one works.

On one of my scopes, the objective lens cover fit perfectly and worked perfectly. However, the ocular lens cover fell right between the two sizes. One size was too lose and easily fell off. Nothing worked to keep it on. The next size down was too tight and upon installation its shape was slightly deformed. The clear cap would flip up at the slightest provocation or not stay closed at all. I still haven't found a solution for it......

Sometimes your measured scope diameter might fall in between two model caps. If you can't shop in person with your actual scope and when in doubt, GOOGLE it and search for "What butler creek lens cap for XYZ scope" and chances are, someone else asked this same question and you'll get which cap numbers you will need. Worked for me a couple times. Once I found someone's post saying "My measurements indicated I needed X size cap but actually Y size fitted better."

If either of the scopes you are buying them for are leupold, don't waste your money on the BC caps, get the alumina ones from leupold. Best invention EVER, aluminum won't snap off like the BCs. I know guys say the plastic ones are fine, but I have busted a dozen over the years. I even use an alumina on the front of my 50mm nightforce, since they are a common size/thread. I just turned the brass insert around with the leupold symbol.
