Can someone please clarify the following..

# No "hotlinking" email/website info or posting of phone numbers for businesses who do not support the operation of CGN.

Is this read as:

No "hotlinking" email/website info

or

posting of phone numbers for businesses who do not support the operation of CGN.

or is it read as one sentence..where it only applies to businesses and their information?

Eg I can hotlink to a Non-corporation?

No "hotlinking" email/website info or posting of phone numbers for businesses who do not support the operation of CGN.

The key word, in my opinion, is "businesses".

But all that you have to do, when in doubt, is to - before posting - select Go Advanced and then de-select Automatically parse links in text. This will avoid the dreaded offense of the non-sponsoring business hotlink (while still permitting you, essentially, to share the information that you wish to share).

If you forget, just edit your post to Remove link and then de-select Automatically parse links in text before saving it.

I've seen different moderators opinions on this, so that is why I'm asking..

once I get the answer (definitive) there is a second part I'll ask as well

It's an and/or situation. Generally it does apply to business, but not exclusively. You're not going to get a set of criteria which will cover every situation that may arise.

Also you can link to a manufacturer, like Smith and Wesson, but not to a dealer selling S&W who's not a sponsor.

so links to government legislation or cases is not allowed then?

I can't see what the problem would be with that, though I'd have to see what it linked to. We do allow links to newspaper articles and the like.

Is there a reason you don't want to be more specific? You can pm me a link if you don't want it posted before you're sure it's okay.

I guess I'm not sure of the intent of the rule, therefore when to object if a Mod deletes the link (eg is the context is ok?? and the mod overreating).

If you look at it from a "protection" of revenue by sponsors, then I can understand it..(not hotlinking to competing businesses) but if the intent is the "Tracking" of links from the remote sites back to CGN, then this is a very different matter to which a large hole exists..

Eg. I can link/imbed graphics, which link to a remote site, but not a regular page link.. a link to a displayed graphic is just as easy (for the remote site operator) to see where the link came from and it's origin to a CGN thread.

(I'm not trying to debate the need for non-hotlinking, I'm just not sure I understand what it's trying to "protect" based on the rule/FAQ the way it is..)

Mod overreating? I'm not that fat.;)

The rule is primarily about giving our sponsors the benefit they deserve. Hot links to polls are frowned upon due to the ability to trace back where all the hits are coming from. Otherwise, there's not usually a problem.

That's the way I understand the intent. Of course, site policy is well above my pay grade and there may be variation in implementation by various mods.

I used those examples because they do sell direct to the public. The problem lies in the fact that so many manufacturers do that these days, as you mentioned.
