Question on Mosin stock

I want to refinish a crappy refurb stock on a 1942 Mosin. Is there a way to take the brass sleeves out of the sling holes without damaging them?

I would simply clean the stock with methyl hydrate, the give it a fresh coat of high quality shellac. That's what should be done to a Russian Mosin, imho.

If it is the post war type of stock I am thinking about, trying to remove the brass sling ports will only damage the wood.
