Question on Standard or Magnum Primer

Hello all, I have been reloading for years.
Always used Standard Primers for non-magnum calibers (7X57; 30-06) unless using ball powder......as the loading manual recommends.

But I had a buddy tell me the other day he uses Magnum primers for all his loads, whether it is ball or extruded powder?????
Claims he has had better accuracy and no extra pressure signs with the same load.

Has anyone else ever tried this??

Either will work, but they aren't interchangeable. I had a 270 that reallu wouldn't cooperate with any load I tried until one day I tried magnum primers and voila.
60 grs H4831sc 130 gr TSX CCI LR primer 2-3 inch groups
60 grs H4831sc 130 gr TSX CCI magnum .50 to 1.00 groups.

Also a very similar velocity.
 
JJ, I generally follow the same guidelines you mentioned but I've always believed that mag. primers should be used when the loads in question are intended for use in lower/freezing temperatures. If that is the case, I don't see why mag. primers couldn't be used year round regardless of temp. as long as pressures aren't excessive - assuming acceptable performance is the result.
 
I almost universally use magnum primers to simplify the logistics of getting components up here. When I lived down south I would switch to a magnum primer if the powder load was greater than 50 grs or if I anticipated that the load would be fired at cold temperatures. This is easier, and there are no reliability, pressure, or accuracy issues as a result.
 
Happy to hear my buddy is not a nut and more people do this than I thought.
