Guys,

I want to buy something which will be fun to shoot/plink with and will not have too hard of a recoil, so my kids can do it too.

Here is my evolution of thought (feel free to comment on it too): From 22LR (bloody cheap, short distance, bad trajectory + hard to justify getting yet one more of those) to .17 HMR (flat trajectory, but relatively short distance +no practical applications (arguably) except for on grasshoppers and such) to .223 That is where I stopped at the moment and I am looking to buy a .223 rifle wich has decent precision out of the box.

However looking at doing plinking the milsupr ammo comest to mind immediately and thus there is a question - which rifles I will be able to use milsurp amo with as well as commercial .223.

Thank you!

My kids (age 11 son, 13 yr daughter), went to the range in Texas while visiting my brother. They shot .22 buckmark, .40glock, .223 Remington Police special, Ruger.22 semi rifle, and Anschutz match.22.

They both loved the scoped Ruger, and the peep-sighted Anschutz best.

(arguably) except for on grasshoppers and such) to .223 That is where I stopped at the moment and I am looking to buy a .223 rifle wich has decent precision out of the box.

I'd say you skipped over a couple of possibles reaching for the 223.
Maybe think of going 22 mag or 22 hornet. The mag won't have the trajectory of the 17, but still hits hard, and the Hornet is the next step up. Loaded with 35gr grenades, gophers turn to mist and the recoil's not too bad for the kids.
