I have read about cowboy action but what other competive shooting groups are active?

You can shoot IDPA with a revolver.

you can also do IPSC it has a revolver class

With a 38 special revolver and half a dozen speedloaders, you can participate in ALL THREE in succession.PPC-IPSC and IDPA Practices and Competitions. Thats what I have done with my Colt Python .357 for several years. It is a lot of fun and gives ONE pistol a great workout with the different scenarios and practice ranges from three yards to 50 yards.
