Question regarding Remington Mohawk 600

Howdy Folks! I haven't seen a Mohawk in many years that has the Vent Rib barrel. I have been looking at a parts catalog that mentions a "Polymer VR" for it. I thought it was metal but can't remember.. Were they originally metal? What function does it fulfill, if any?

Really would like to find one in .350Rem mag.

You won't find a Mohawk with a vent rib, because the Mohawk didn't have one. The plain old 600 had the rib. The 660, and 600 Mohawk did not have a rib. The original rib was indeed plastic, but aluminum and steel replacements are available.
 
When the 600 series evolved into the Model 673 (the final iteration, which is based on the Model 7 action) the vent rib became a metal fixture. Still superfluous, but metal none the less (some say, however, that the metal rib is a good heat radiator). As for the .350 Rem Mag chambering, the 600 and the Mohawks were a tad on the noticeable side in terms of recoil due to their light weight (short barrels). My 673 in .350 Rem Mag is, by comparison, very nice to shoot. :)

673 offers easier bolt removal, and actual bottom metal. I am not a fan of ribs, but at least the 673's is metal. If you arent in love with the rib, there are other choices aswell. The model 7, and 700 both came in 350. Ruger also offered several versions of their bolt action in it aswell.
 
Any/all of Double Gun's suggestions would be very good indeed. The Ruger is very nice and would be (probably) much easier to find and likely considerably less expensive since there were more made over a longer period of time. Good luck and let us know if you find something. :)
