Question: What's a pistol "cup"

I bought some gas checks off Ebay and the seller threw in a box of 500 Hornady 44 Caliber Pistol Cups (that's exactly what box says).. They are like a very very deep , eg 1/4" deep gas check.

Can somebody tell me what they're for?

Never seen a mold that would work with them.. regular gas checks yes, but nothing this deep... they'd almost go to the crimp ring on the 44 molds I have..??

They may be half-jackets for making that type of pistol bullet, looks something like a Keith type but jacketed halfway up and crimped into the soft lead core. I think some of the ammo companies still make them.
