Im wondering if anyone could tell me what causes or caused these marks on the slide of my almost new s&w mp9. I don't think they were there when i bought the pistol last summer, and its only seen 200 rounds maybe....

Thanks again

From that picture it looks as though the marks are under the finish, so they must have been there. I would see if they'll give you a new slide, it looks as though the metal wasn't properly polished prior to Melonite and colour finishing. Wortners is the Eastern S&W warranty depot.

I am quite sure that it is rust develope over time. Saw a similar pic at mp-pistol.com while back. You may want to post this pic there and ask some comments.

It was rust

Before it was sand blasted, acid bathed, phosphated and finished. It appears to be below the surface finish and not new pitting. The rust or perhaps casting or forging imperfections were present during the manufacturing process and became surface imperfections.
Stainless does corrode and when it does it usually pits and looks just like that.

M&P's are mass produced service pistols. They are black guns for a reason...they are intended for day in day out holster carry. They are not collectors guns...they are for shooters.

The finish is in no way comparable to say... my S&W DA revolver which has a beautiful deep blue finish.

Like I said I think it is quite normal.

If it bothers you by all means check into it with your dealer or warranty center.

I'll just keep shooting mine

Mine isn't like that. If you're sure it's a new development I would try to get it replaced by warranty. If there's a possibility that it's been there the whole time I would say since you didn't tell the seller right away you're going to be out of luck.

At any rate, I would still contact S&W or at least a warranty center as I'm sure they would want to know about defects in their products.

I can see how it would or could have been overlooked in the first place; excited about the new toy, off to the range to try it out and not really look it all over, especially new out of the box covered in filmy gun oil....
