Questions about a used Henry 22 mag lever.

First, I don't post a lot on here, just let me know if im posting on in the wrong place.

Okay so I got offered a Henry lever in 22 mag for 100 bucks. I know that cheap but the gun is in bad shape but is still shooting if its worked fairly hard. But what it sounds like it would only a couple of parts to get it working good again. But i'm having no luck finding them anywhere. It needs a new lever, the inside half is bent too far out and the guy used a grinder on it to fix it, or something. And the piece that the lever rests in when the action is closed is also worn out, look on henry's site it's called the carrier. From the lever rubbing against it im told. Both maybe could be repaired, but would be better if replaced. I don't mind working on guns, but i don't want to spend hundreds on a used gun. Is this something I should bother fixing? Or just buy it and use it as is untill it totally breaks? Or pass it up?

Pass on it like a fat chick at closing time.
Sounds like it'll be trouble and a money pit.
Search EE and spend a little more money on a Henry you're going to be proud to own and happy to shoot.
 
At first I thought the title read Henry Mares leg, then I just about crapped my pants when I saw $100! Although, when I take the time to actually read the post, I have to agree with wham-o. The lever won't set you back much, but by the time you start farting around with the action parts, it's best to just pass, in my opinion.

I talked to the guy again and he offered that I can shoot it before buying, might try it out, nothing to lose but maybe a half hour.

Also I E-Mailed Henry asking for a quote on those two parts. Hopefully they check their E-Mail.

I guess i'm thinking if i can get this gun going good for under $150 it's still a steal in my book.
 
I'd be surprised if Henry replies let alone quotes you prices on the parts.
Most of the times the replies are generic saying "they have distributes in Canada and to contact them" bla..bla..bla.
I've talked to a few Henry distributors here and although they make great rifles, both said Henry is not a very "reliable" company for warranty work or to deal with.
 
Ah, ya that's what I was thinking, happens with most large companies that don't sell directly to the customer. They do sell the over-sized lever for $50 on the website. Seems a little pricey.

Maybe a long shot, but do you know of anyone that would make after-market replacement gun parts?

Edit: Well i guess these guns are not a popular as I thought, found nothing.

I just picked up a Henry mares leg .22 from P&D

I was curious about getting a 'deal' in the EE but nothing that 'blew up my skirt'

Give them a call, very fast shipping & great to deal with over the phone. It's so nice to talk gun talk and get a gun talk answer rather than the usual bland answers

However....their customer service is addicting. I found the gun I wanted, paid for it, got my final transfer notification and got the shipping notice in 15 minutes.
Nuff said, they got my business and should you free up some cash, deal with them!
 
I didn't think these Henry's were overly priced?
By the time you round up all the parts, yank some roots and
bang yer head, maybe new won't hurt as much?
If you are offered the chance to try it out, why not?
Have some fun with it.
 
Henry has great customer service, but not if you live in Canada. You will unlikely be able to get parts shipped directly from them.

The dang State Department has made so many US manufactures very hesitant to deal with the Canadian public directly.

Still, for $100, if you are handy with tools and want a project I would certainly grab it.
 
Good news! Henry E Mailed me back with quotes for the parts and shipping costs. A little over $50, im sure thats us shipping but i live ten minutes away from the border so no big deal. Hopefully they accept canadian credit cards. But i now going to have to wait untill next week to try the gun out. Guy left for a fishing trip.

I PMed with another CGNer who lived near the border and Henry was happy to ship to a US address (he had a US post office box). Just not to Canada direct.

For them its just not worth the hassle of having to keep the paperwork to prove that every part sent here is not subject to ITAR and every end user is not an El Queada member.



Heck if any CGNer lives near the border they could really help us out by doing this on a regular basis.

After all only barrels and recievers are a no go, everything else is kosher.
Add a 10% surcharge for your trouble and get a bunch of regular length butt stocks (for Mares Leg owners) and large loop levers. Throw them up on the EE and watch your inbox get plugged up.
