I was thinking about a non restricted AR type black rifle in a different caliber...I’m fairly new to ARs and wasn’t sure what other calibers I could use...6.5 grendel, .270 or something big enough for deer but smaller than a .30 caliber round.
I already have a bcl 102 in 308.
Is it doable and what would it entail?

AR rifles have been assembled in dozens of different calibers.

The AR-15 sized receiver was of course originally designed around the .223 Rem cartridge, but can be adapted to calibers from .22LR to .50 Beowulf.

The AR-10 sized receiver was originally designed around the .308 Win cartridge and can easily be adapted to anything with a similar case head size and similar or shorter length, which covers from .22-250 to .358 Winchester.

The .260 Remington sounds ideal for your needs, and could be built on AR-10 sized lower, such as a Stag 10 or the BCL-102.

6.5 Grendel (AR15 platform)would do the job and parts are easy to come by.
Or 6.5 CM using your current platform, all you need is a barrel.

I recently did up a Modern Sporter in 6.8 spc. Factory ammo is plentiful but it took me FOREVER to find a NR length barrel.

NR length 6.5 Grendel barrels are much easier to find and the Grendel is a more capable round. Factory ammo is harder to find but there are plenty of easily found components to make up your own.

All the Gucci off the wall Sh!t is to much fucing around.
Parts ,barrels, components are all hard to get.
At the end of the day,all you got is a one off, that only has value to you.

It won’t do anything different than the others.
The great thing about 6.5 , you can load the same bullets for either platform.
Same powder and primers as well.

^^^ Yup. And if you ever decide to sell it the 6.5 will be gone while you're still busy trying to give the oddball build away because nobody wants it.

Only reason I looked around for a 6.8 spc barrel is because I picked up a crap load of ammo for cheap a while ago so I might as well shoot it.

300blk doesnt have the range of the others but its easily the easiest caliber conversion. Just put a 300 blackout barrel on a 5.56 gun. Same bcg, everything.

You really should get into reloading.
It don’t take long to load a couple of hundred rounds, once you get the hang of it.
And you’d be surprised how rewarding it is, when you can put all your shots into a nickel,at 100 yards.

Also makes for cheaper but better hunting ammo.

Yup I upgraded my Norinco CQB with an NEA 300 Blackout barrel. A bit of wrenching and port drilling. When ARs get banned, you can pick up uppers nice and cheap, so maybe wait a week.

Yes, I plan on learning reloading. As soon as I learn to spend less time on CGN I just might have the time to learn reloading lol..

.277 Wolverine, 25-45 Sharps both use the 223 bolt and magazine

I wondered if someone would mention the Wolverine! The 6.8 SPC is another excellent 270 caliber in an AR size form factor, however a barrel, mags and bolts need to be changed. As for the Wolverines only a barrel change is required along with a ton of .223 brass is readily available.

That is debatable because you purchase more loading accessories, more consumables and eventually shoot more.

But they are banned so what will you do with an upper?

So if I went the wolverine route what would be a good nr receiver set to build with? Or even a nr .223 that I could get an extra barrel in .277 for?

I have a wife,2 teenage kids, own a small contracting company, work 50 60 hrs per week and spend to much time on CGN.
But still make time for it all .
Multi tasking and 4 hrs of sleep is the name of the game :)
