Questions about Bushnell 3200 10 x 40 mil dot scope

I'm a bit puzzled by this scope.

It seems to be designed for target/tactical use but it doesn't have an adjustable objective lens. The ocular lens needs to be re-focussed for the range you are shooting at, unlike most scopes where focus stays through a power change. Also, when you change the focus the magnification changes a bit.

Does the focus adjustment change the parallax setting? When you change focus and the magnification shifts a bit, do the mil dots change proportionately so that they still work accurately for range estimation?

Can anyone enlighten me on how this scope works?
 
Umm, maybe I am understanding this wrong, but the scope I think you are referring to is fixed power, so not quite sure what you are asking. It doesn't need adjustment in the objective lens, cause you aren't changing the focal length. The only focus, per say, is with eye relief in the ocular bell. This scope has a fixed parallax of 100 yards.

If I understand correctly you guys are asking about paralax. The paralax is fixed at 100yrds. this means that everything you see from 100 yrds to infinity will be clear and in focus. Probably within 50yrds in you'll notice things will be slightly bit blurry or out of focus. It does have an eye piece that could be focused to make your picture clearer. It is a fixed maginfication.

But don't most target scopes, fixed or variable, have adjustable objective lens so that any parallax error can be precisely adjusted out?

Regarding the ocular focusing, some scopes I've looked at with this feature hold the focus at all ranges once focused. This scope seems to need to be re-focused for the range you are shooting at if different from the last range you were shooting at. Also, when focusing, the magnification seems to change a bit. Does this render the mil dot system inaccurate for range estimation?
 
Thee only adjustment on that particular scope, is to focus on the crosshairs. Your eye position will change slightly from when you are shooting prone and move to the bench or kneeling say. It is fixed power, so it is always at 10X magnification, there fore no need to correct for distance focus at different ranges. Maybe someone else here can jump in if I am not explaining this clearly enough.

Maybe the scope I was looking at has a problem but focused with the ring at the eyepiece end of the scope at 100 yards, then shifting to 200 yards, the focus was definitely out. Does this not happen on other examples of this scope?

I have one and it is a good scope but ALWAYS rememebr that it is a $200 scope.

I found that 300M and less everything was fairly clear and at 400-500 it got blurry. Reguardless of what you do with the eye focus peice as it is a Paralax issue at that range.

It is an entry level scope. At $200 it does its job nicely. If you are looking for something that has all the levers and adjustments then you are going to be paying more. I could make it work out to 500M, beyond that and I dont think it will do the job. TWO problems... magnification AND paralax. I like to see what I am shooting at.

When you are shooting 500M+ you need more than 10x power IMHO, and the ability to adjust your paralax just makes things clearer...

I aint telling you to buy or not to buy... BUT I would not use that scope past 400M.
 
I've found mine works well from 100 metres plus. I don't really find much of a parallax problem with this scope, so the fact that it doesn't have an adustable objective is not a huge issue for me. The furthest I've used it is 600 metres, I think, but I don't see why it shouldn't work at longer ranges.
 
I don't have any issues with mine, but I only shoot between 50 and 300 yards tops.
I haven't noticed the focus issue you've mentioned because I just focused mine and have left it alone from there.
For the money spent it is an excellent scope, but I agree totally with the others who have said not to expect $1000 options on a $250 scope. It's kinda like asking a NDP'er to explain how people are dangerous and not guns.
 
I have one and I understand what your saying about the appearance of magnification when focusing the crosshairs. It does look like the sight picture comes in a bit when you adjust the eye piece.
