Today I was offered in trade a few interesting guns in near new condition. One is an All Weather Ruger Model 77 Mk II Stainless in 223 bought in the mid 1990s. Winchester Model 70 Sporter Varmint 243 Post 64, and a Marlin 1894 CS in 357, they haven't been fired in years.
When I asked him about the Ruger rifle he couldn't tell me the rate of twist.
The new ones I think have a 1-9" twist but what did they have back in the 90s?
The Winchester Mod 70 243 has a 26" but we can't use that caliber except during deer season.
What province do they use 243 as a varmint caliber?
The Marlin M 1894 in 357 do they use them in cowboy action shooting or do they use 45 Colt and 44-40?
The Sporter Varmint is a nice rifle. Bit of heft, but the barrel isn't a truck axle. Apart from medium game hunting, it could be used for varmints most anywhere. Likely excellent for coyotes.
The Sporter Varmint rifles I recall had a medium weight barrel, not the heavy barrel of the Varmint.
Always liked the pushfeed M70s more than the long extractor versions.
357 marlin is very desirable especially if it is JM marked. Are you planning on keeping or flipping the guns? I know a few people interested in the ruger and marlin.
I tried the Marlin out yesterday and I love the way it shoots. It shot exceptionally well I think I will keep it for a while.
I tried out a new Mossberg MVP it arrived minus the scope and bipod. I installed a Bosch and Lomb Elite 4000 6-24 X 40 scope and a bipod for my friend.
We completed the trade for it at the range, out of the box it placed the first three shots you could cover them with a dime at 50 yards. It has a rough bolt needs to be smoothed out.
I shot one round then cleaned the bore and repeated the process 10 times. Shot 5 more then cleaned it again. We ran out of time and that's where things came to an end.
Good shooter for the money. Its not a high end target rifle but I like it.
I hope to try out the Stainless Ruger 77 all-weather 223 to see how it shoots.
The Winchester M70 243 Varminter will go I don't have any use for it.
.243 is used in every Province for varmints. And deer. And bears. And antelope. Nice to see Ontario isn't the only Province with stupid calibre rules though. Here it's in some municipalities only but .275 or .270 calibre by cartridge name. Some say for small game only. Some it's everything. Stupid civil servants.
26" appears to be the standard barrel length for a Win M70 Sporter Varmint. There are a few on some of the U.S. auction sites with that barrel in .22 calibres. Long for deer though. Has a 1 in 10 twist.
The Marlin gets used with ammo loaded to .38 Special velocities.
