I am intrested in getting into shooting an ar-15 style gun.

Must of the guns I have looked at only come with 5 round mags. Now it was my understanding that a restricted firearm had a limit of 10 rounds, where a non restricted semi had the limit of 5. Can anyone shed some light for me?

Magazines designed and intended for semiauto centerfire rifles or shotguns have a capacity of 5 of whatever cartridge they are intended for.
Magazines designed and intended for handguns have a capacity of 10.
Magazines designed and intended for manually operated centerfire rifles or shotguns have no maximum capacity.
Rimfire rifles have no maximum capacity, but handguns still have a limit of 10.

All rifles have a mag cap of 5 rounds. Restricted or non. Buuuuuuut....there are AR-15 platforms that are small enough that they are considered pistols. And therefore qualify to use 10 rd mags. Since mag restrictions apply to the commonly available firearm which they were intended for, and the magazine specs are the same, you end up with lar-15 mags a ten round magazine that can be used in your AR-15 rifle. This is my understanding anyway. The rifle/pistol works against us sometimes too. Like the BRS-99 machine pistol being considered a rifle because it has an extendible stock, there fore limiting it to 5 rd mags.

It's complicated.

Basically, restricted semi auto pistols are limited to 10 rounds, and semi auto rifles and shotguns (non restricted or restricted) to 5 rounds (except the garand, ok to a full clip of 8 rounds).

BUT there are some pistol mags that fit rifles, which are legal, and allow you to hold 10 in a rifle. For the AR-15, these are called LAR mags. Another potential avenue for greater mag capacity is using mags for the 'wrong' calibre, such as 40 cal mags in a 9mm, which works in some pistols, or 50 cal Beowulf mags in a 223 AR and allow a few extra rounds.

Look around on the forums here for more discussion on this.

No offense OP.... but how did you pass your PAL/RPAL?
To summarize:
Pistol Mags: 10 rounds
Rifle Magazines, Self loading (Semi-Auto): 5rnds
Rifle Magazines, Manual Loading (Lever, Bolt, Etc): Unlimited
Rifle Magazines, Rimfire: Unlimited

Now, to put a slight amount of confusion on this.
If a pistol magazine happens to fit a rifle but was not designed for it, then you can use the full 10 round capacity (example, LAR pistol AR mags)
There are also magazines that happen to fit smaller cartridges (5.56) but were designed for larger cartridges (.50BEO), these can be loaded with however many 5.56 rounds they happen to fit as long as they only hold 5 rounds of .50beo (This might be a touchy CGN subject, if it is, MODS feel free to delete).

I think that about covers it.

And then there are the nearly mythical .50 beowulf mags.. Look up TV-press pass .50 beowulf magazines on YouTube. That'll wet your AR appetite. And now the NFA is saying derestriction is on the short term (relative to the political spectrum) table. Things could be magical.

There is a TON of incorrect info in this post.
You may want to visit the RCMP website to get your facts straight.

It seems the government (RCMP) is ####ed up in their thinking.

If you already can only use it on the range and can only transport with a permit. Why would you limit the cap to five of a rifle but not a pistol?

Personally I would be more worried (if that is their justification) of a "bad guy" with a ten round pistol hidden in his pocket then some jack ass trying to inconspicuous hide a rifle on his persons.

I remember seeing a pump action .223 I think it was a remington. It takes ar mags. If someone one were to manufacture mag specifily for that rifle and perhaps even stamp for "_______ ONLY" (name of pump action remington) would that mag still be limited to 5?

Your trying to make sense of it. The laws were designed to affect you and me. A criminal does not bide by the laws, atts, mag caps, etc.

These restrictions are there simple to hinder lawful ownership and make it difficult to be an enjoyable sport in Canada.

Dont even get me started on how in Canada it is morally superior to be a victim and not a person capable of defending themselves if necessary.
